As you know I'm a fan of black and white -- and of these my favorites for composition (which is critical with black and white photos) are the first and second to last in the first post (love the ball photo), and the third one in the second post because you got down to Ouzo's eye level. I think they'd look especially nice with a tone and maybe some contrast tweaks in Photoshop. Ouzo is a handsome boy!

Thank you, Melanie! I too love the ball pics, I was amazed how good they came. I will try to play with them a lil' bit more in a photo editor. I'm learning

Where did you get Ouzo from? Was it any where near Elizabeth?

The black and white looks awesome, Anda! I like the ball photo a lot, too. I also like the close-up one in the field.

I took the liberty of some Photoshop Phun with the eye-level photo. I'm not sure I like this any better. The highlights are kinda blown.

Ouzo is a striking dog - and the photos are beautiful! I think black and white photography is an art. The picture with the ball is awesome, but I think the first couple are my favorites. I like the way the trees look.

Aw Anda, you know I think Ouzo is the cutest, but the pic with the ball in the air is a hoot, lolol. I'm thinking flying alien object... and Ouzo's got it covered. Trust the BC's to protect us from alien invasion!

Nice pics!! The eye level one is my favourite.

Did you take them as normal digital pics and then just reduce the saturation? I try that sometimes when I've totally f---ed up the colours with photoshop, but never got anything special out of it.

Here's the short version of what I usually do with black and white photos (scanned negatives or digital) using Photoshop CS2:

(1) Adjust levels (clip ends and slide middle until I like the way it looks)

(2) Convert to duotone

(3) Adjust brightness and contrast

(4) Tweak curves if necessary

(5) Dodge eyes on light-eyed dogs

(6) Iteratively use unsharp mask and reduce size gradually if original size is very large

(7) Convert to RGB 8 bit for saving as jpg (if original is a RAW file or TIFF)

(8) Usually add a black border by increasing canvas size a tad and making the canvas color black

I think color photos often look nice a bit desaturated but not all the way to black and white.

Thanks for the list! I'll definitely give it another try. Some snow/dark dog pictures just come out better in b/w, only mine don't look like much so far  ...but it's fun to play around with them.

Sandra, yes, I took them as regular digital pictures, then converted them to gray scale, then played a bit with the settings on a few of them. I liked them much better as B&W, even though some of them were prety nice in colors as well.

I had used in the past the settings on my camera to take the pics straight in B&W, but I didn't see a lot of advantages vs. converting color to gray scale.

I will certainly try Melanie's list of To Do's.

These pics were more about the pictures (and the fall season) that about the dog, if it makes sense

Got some more (from Sunday) I think these came out much better than the first ones! The light and the sky were just perfect, plus he was posed on top of a hill, a perfect setting!

I will first post the B&W version, then the color ones (which I like almost as much)

And now the colored ones

The only things I changed on these were the contrast and brightness, but they're not too far fetched from the original ones. It made them look much better in B&W. Oh, and yes, I added borders, per Melanie
