With the Texas summer heat right around the corner I am thinking I should get a fan for Maggie's crate for when we go to lessons, clinics, etc. Does anyone have any suggestions as to the best place to get one and which ones are best? Thanks in advance.

My aunt uses this fan... http://www.drsfoster...=3554&subref=AA
She breeds and shows Sheltie's, she always has these on the dogs crates in the summer durring the shows. I have never heard her complain about them, she has had them for a while.

We just got a couple small battery operated camping ones from Wal-Mart. They can either stand up on their own or you can use some mini bungee cords to hold them onto crates. I might at some point invest in a larger one but for now those work.

I've used the fans specifically designed for crates in the past, but frankly I don't think they provide all that much air circulation. I got a fan from WalMart, also battery powered, but larger, and you could at least feel the air moving, and I've had good luck with that. As it's often hot at the Bluegrass, I was just thinking about what I would do for cooling, and my solution, which works great, is to use one of those inverters that you plug into your cigarette lighter that allows you to plug an electric fan (or two) in. I can really move some air then! The inverter I have will shut off if the battery is draining, so I'm not likely to be stranded somewhere.

Remember that dogs don't sweat like we do, so the evaporative cooling that makes fans useful to us isn't as helpful to them, so you're really just trying to move air to keep the temperature down a bit.

Another thing to consider is Aluminet shade cloth or similar. I have several of those and they really do help keep the temperature cooler in a vehicle.

I was thinkng about having her crate in the back of the Tahoe, with the back door up and all the windows down and then if I had a fan I could keep the air moving too. She won't be in there all day but I want to make sure she is as comfortable as possible when she is. Its not too terribly hot yet but it will be before too much longer. I'm just starting out so I will see what everyone else does as well.
