I started dabbling in knitting pattern design last year and have been having lots of fun with it!

I've gravitated to dog themes in a few of my patterns. Today I took pictures of my latest project - the Puppy Trails Tote! Kipp seemed like a very natural choice for a prop - he gives me those awesome expressions when I say words like "frisbee" "ball" or "sheep" :D

Nice tote. I like the colors you used.

And Kipp is a great model with those wonderful ears.

Thanks! It will be for sale as soon I finish the testing/writing it up process - probably 2-3 weeks :D

Wow, thats really beautiful! I can sew and make all kinds of stuff but knitting eludes me. I am envious of your talent!

I love to knit. If I'm sitting, I'm knitting. I am currently making Dead Fish Hats to sell at the Farmer's Market.

I have a border collie sweater pattern in my collection. The pattern comes from Ewe Can Knit. I have yet to make it but I take it out every so often and plan the colours that I'd like to use. I have a pretty good collection of sheep themed sweaters as well. Let me know when your pattern is ready. It's very nice.

Lately, I've been knitting with hand dyed alpaca. Lovely stuff but rather pricey. I am also combing out my fluffy Tex and saving the undercoat to have it spun into yarn. Someday, some of Tex will be a scarf.

Mara, do you have a Woof! Hat pattern in KnitPicks? A catalogue came today, and the"by" name sounds familiar. I have small addiction to KnitPicks... Never mind that I have my own sheep who have an annoyingly renewable supply of wool!

Yes that's one of my patterns!! I've been designing patterns with their independent designer program for the last year or so and loving it! It's been a great way to feed the yarn addiction since they provide the yarn support once they approve a pattern idea :D :D I got a box of Chroma in the mail yesterday for my next two designs :D It's the first time I've used the worsted weight and I'm really loving it

I've got the full supply of wool too, but I've decided that I like knitting much better than spinning so I also have tubs full of yarn... :rolleyes:

I'm a terrible spinner. So terrible, I sold my wheel. I let the local guild take care of it for me. Every winter, I swear I'm only going to do projects with the yarn I have. Then the catalogues roll in, or I find myself mysteriously in a yarn store. I have very low self-discipline sometimes.

I just bought a black Blue Face Leicester ram. My yarn/fiber/spinning/weaving/etc neighbor ladies just about died when they saw him. They loved the fleece off my white BFL, but the black wool sent them into fits! :)

How does the IDP thing work? I've worked up a fair amount of patterns over the years that might be worth sharing.

How does the IDP thing work? I've worked up a fair amount of patterns over the years that might be worth sharing.


Here's the page about it. It's pretty straight forward. Work up a proposal with pictures or sketches, include the finished size(s), what Knit Picks yarn you will use/how much, your name/address.

If you scroll down on the page I linked you'll find a link taking you to the submission upload page. They reveiw them and get back with you in 1-3 weeks.

If they accept, they'll send you the yarn to make the project. You make it up, take pics of the finished project and put together a PDF pattern. Then mail the sample back/email the pattern and pics.

They do a final review (Which most everything passes, providing you did a good job with the sample and pattern etc) and it goes up on the site within about 3 weeks. Then they send the sample back to you.

Designers get 100% of the profits :) and are payed through direct deposit every 3 months.

FWIW, even with the supply of yarn through the IDP program for the past year and decent self control, I still wind up buying yarn. Just got a box from Little Knits yesterday :D
