What did he weigh at 16 weeks? At that age, was he lean or did he still have a bit of puppy pudge?

I think your bigger concern should be "will he grow into that ridiculously long tail?!?!" ;-)

He's not done growing at 7 months. How much weight exactly he will gain is impossible to say. At 7 months Dexter weighed 34lbs; he's nearing 3 years now and weighs about 44lbs. He was just neutered two months ago, and is still skinny as a rail, but very muscley. He's also very tall.

If they are lean at 16 weeks...

Take the weight of a pup at 16 weeks and double it. That is an estimation of final adult size. A Border Collie will be about 75% of their adult weight at 1 year old but may not finish growing until 2 to 3 years old.

We got Kye at 8 months and he was verging on skeletal at around 32lbs. He's quite a tall dog.

He didn't grow any more but his weight has been fairly constant for the last few years (now 6 yo) at around 42lbs and he's not at all fat.

He was neutered as soon as we got him.

Aw heck, now his tail looks downright short. ;)

It's hard to find a picture that shows it well, but Secret was blessed with the tail genes in her family. It has a light curl at the tip, otherwise it would drag on the ground. Her brother's poor tail ends above his hocks -- Poor fella, it stands out even more since he's a smoothie. lol

Long tails make for good streamers when you color them. B)

As for the original question, I concur that the suggestion that you double their weight at 16 weeks tends to work out quite well.

Ben has long legs, his tail has a slight curl depending on what he is doing.
