Leonhardi is a religious festivity, on which the horses and carts are bling-ed up to honour their patron saint, St. Leonhard, and are driven to a special church to get blessed. I went to the Tölzer version (does the "ö" in "Tölz" go all weird on your screens? Sorry...) yesterday, to try my luck photographically. Besides getting frozen, I mostly got a taste of how there's no beating crappy backgrounds when photographing large objects. But the horse lovers here might enjoy the draft horses anyway, so here are the pictures:
![]() This type of horse is very common here. Almost all the carts were pulled by four of these. ![]() ![]() Little Haflingers ![]() small horse, big sneeze ![]() ![]() ![]() Brewery horses ![]() Some of those were enormous, especially their feet - wow! -------------------- |

Great pics. FWIW, I enjoyed looking at the backgrounds too.
Thank you for getting frozen for the sake of those pics. PS - my "o's" came out OK. How do you get the umlaut over the "o's" -- keyboard? Program? Sorry. Showing my ignorance here. Someday I'd like a cyrillian keyboard, program, or whatever it is you need. -------------------- Vicki

PS - my "o's" came out OK. How do you get the umlaut over the "o's" -- keyboard? Program? Sorry. Showing my ignorance here. Someday I'd like a cyrillian keyboard, program, or whatever it is you need. Your PC should have a little program -- often called Character Map -- that will allow you to enter an occasional accented character. Having lived in a place called Tønsvik (where ø is the Scandinavian cognate of ö) I use it quite often. Things get a bit more exciting with Eastern European languages (e.g. 'ę' e-ogonek), but most modern PCs should display them correctly. A cyrillic - keyboard would be very handy for entering Russian, but not so much for German! German layout keyboards are hard to find in the US, but you can change your keyboard layout to German (and, of course, have to remember which charcter comes where!). BTW: I love the photos. -------------------- |

Thank you for sharing!! The horses are beautiful. Is there any purpose (other than decorative) for the basket-style "muzzles" on some of the (brewery?) horses?
I don't think any horse but a draft horse could handle all the weight of that tack - awesome!! -------------------- DebC

Gorgeous! Are the smaller horses draft ponies? Thanks so much for posting these. Ruth The little guys with the flaxen manes and tails are Haflingers. More here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Haflinger_(horse) Wonderful! Cluttered backgrounds make me cranky too, but these shots rise above it. Very nice. My favorite team was the Fjords. |

I haven't seen that nice of feet on draft horses in a long time! That team of four sparkling greys is beautiful! I wouldn't want to be in charge of keeping that mush horseflesh clean though
ETA: I'm not sure about these muzzles (we call them "beekie baskets" LOL!), but I've driven teams who had them on to keep them from eating everything within reach. Those were just plain, mesh baskets, though. Aside: If anyone wants a cyrillic keyboard layout, I can ask my sister how she does it. She's a Russian scholar, and so types half of what she writes in Russian. -------------------- Northfield Farm:

Thanks, we're having a smaller version of the same thing here tomorrow, so I'll get another try...hopefully with some less tourists in the background...
I think the muzzles might have been to keep them from biting each other, or to keep people from feeding them stuff all the time while they were making deliveries? I don't know...these days it's just one more thing that you can possibly hang on a horse on Leonhardi Aha, so they were Fjord horses! I wondered about them, they look quite a lot like Przewalski horses with a weird haircut The ö, ü, and ä are on my keyboard, sitting all together on the far right -------------------- |

Like Ben, I thought the team of four greys was fabulous, and the fjords were great too. They're all beautiful. There's something to be said for the "plain" farm horses as well. Thanks, Sandra, for taking these and sharing them with us.

Aha, so they were Fjord horses! I wondered about them, they look quite a lot like Przewalski horses with a weird haircut LOL, Fjords do look a lot like Przewalksi's - right down to the zebra-like striping on the inside upper legs. The weird haircut is called "roaching", and it's done to show the dark dorsal stripe in the mane. It always makes me think of cookies with a fudge center. I used to drive a zippy little Fjord mare in lessons and just fell in love with the breed. What gorgeous pictures. I wish our Haflingers were still the old, drafty European style. We're breeding them taller and finer-boned over here for some odd reason, and I think we've lost a lot in temperament along the way. I love that tack. THe muzzles look just like really fancy grazing muzzles. Maybe they used them so cart horses wouldn't eat up the shrubbery while out making deliveries? -------------------- Sally

People do some interesting things to Fjord manes. I went looking on the web some time ago to find a Fjord with a grown-out mane. Took a bit of looking, but I did find one. I love the one with the crenelated mane.
