~ This is probably not what you wanted to hear~

My Shiro was from Canaan Ranch. She had all sorts of dog and people aggression. She died last year. We spent a lot of time working with her to be a part of society. They sold her at 5 weeks of age. She was an ok herder.

Jake, another one from there, went blind at a young age and had all sort of health issues and he belonged to Jane Doe, one of our rescuers. Another belongs to a student of mine, again another one of our rescuers, a decent herder but with behavorial issues, They sell a lot of puppies and quite of few of them end up in rescue.

Our local BC rescue has called him about taking his pups back and he laughs at her. I haven't dealt with him in a while but the active rescue folks still rescue a lot of his dogs. As far as I know, he does nor hip or eyes check on his dogs. (Hence why Jake and Shiro went blind) and certainly no working criteria. He is a place the local rescuers avoid.

I don't know what he is like now but he was a puppy mill under the guise of a working ranch when I dealt with him. According to Jane Doe, one of our rescuers, he buys ABCA dogs and then breeds them, and always has puppies on the ground.

We loved our Shiro and she took a tremendous amount of work. She was the horror or Border Collies. Any other Border Collie we have raised since is a piece of cake compared to her. She did have a heart of gold and we would do it again. We loved her like our daughter and she taught us patience. I still miss her terribly. (by doing it again, I mean not buy from him, but still raise and love Shiro)

Well, Diane, I thought the website raised a lot of red flags, but was avoiding saying anything negative. Thanks for contributing first-hand personal information. According to what I saw and what you say, I would never recommend this individual as a source for pups.

For what it's worth, a number of the Arabs for sale looked skinny, and I realize that Arabs should be lean horses, but some did not look well tended - from the pictures on the website only, and I could easily be mistaken. Nevertheless, that did not improve my impression of this business.

I am glad for those who have healthy, sensible dogs and sad for those who have had problems.

I have Polish Arab...two in fact. They are much fatter that what is on their site . Arabs should not be thin with ribs showing....no horse in fact should have ribs showing.

That was my thought precisely, and some seemed to be in winter coat as well, which led me to believe they were even thinner than they might have looked.

Thankfully Emma loves people! She is very sweet tempered, and any person could be her best friend.

On the topic of breeders, does anyone know about Hob Nob in Rochester, WA? Someone once told me my pup Seek looked like a Hob Nob, not really sure about that one. Seek is a torpedo though. Fastest dog I've seen... I noticed that a lot of HN dogs are very competitive and fast... and Steeple (hob nob bc) won the 2009 National Agility Championships, pretty incredible video. I think 30.31 seconds. That's the only thing I could see about Seek being hob nob, her speed tongue.gif

I want to own a red someday. Emma gives me a little bit of that fix though happy.gif

In agility, Hob Nobs are considered one of the best, if not the best Border Collies out there. From Steeple to Slick, they are phenomenal. I don't know a whole lot about the breeder, only that is very hard to get one. There's an essay to write, a long application, then you must fly out there to see the pups and Jan, the breeder, matches the dog to you. I know a few people that have them, and they are amazing.

Are you kidding me???!!!!! The day I spend $3K on a dog better be the day that joker starts doing the dishes! That is the craziest thing I ever heard! And these aren't proven dogs right? Holy crap!

The prices are crazy high! I came across her when I was originally looking for a bc, because I live in washington. It made me think "is a border collie really that expensive!?" huh.gif

Any bc we ever owned was a rescue... so I had no clue about breeder prices and her prices had me a little worried.

The dishes, more like contributing to the mortgage payment!

All that and you still don't "own" the dog either.

I usually lurk, but I thought I'd add.

Hob Nob herding video for anyone curious (that is the breeder in the video, she gives clinics, too, or used to):

Oh my. I just wanted to reach through the computer screen and snatch that rope out of her hand and let the dogs actually go around the stock and work them. What is she trying to teach those dogs? That you're never allowed to gather stock? Not once did she let Fusion actually cover the stock properly (when she actually let go of the rope for a short time). I'd sure like to see a video of the end result of that training.... It was all I could do to sit through that. Gah!

J.
