Eye Troubles.

I can't see the video but my answer would probably be the same if I could. If flushing out the eye doesn't help you should see a vet asap.

I will take a wait and see approach over some things but not generally with eyes if I don't know what is wrong.

If he is at all light sensitive in that eye, it is likely to be a corneal scratch. Like mum24dog, eyes are one thing that I don't mess around with. It is far to easy to lose an eye. Always err on the side of caution where eyes are concerned, and get it looked at.

If he only had a bit of goop coming out and no other symptoms, I'd give him a bit of time to see if it was just some dust or other material that had gotten in there and caused the production of the goop. *But* (and I might be wrong) it does look like he's acting a bit sensitive with that eye, not really squinting but looking like he's thinking about squinting. That is what would make me wonder if he doesn't have a minor scratch/infection starting (as mentioned above), something that's just beginning to bother him but not really obvious (other than the goop) at this stage.

That said, do you have any non-steroidal eye ointment available? I say "non-steroidal" because my vet says that the steroidal ointments are *not* good if there is a scratch or ulcer. If you do, you might want to apply some of that.

I'd tend to agree that eyes are not something to risk and, with this being Friday, you might want to consider a vet visit by tomorrow if he is not better.

Best wishes that it's nothing significant and it's better soon!

Thanks folks. Last night, he was really bad and in a lot of pain. So I brought him to the vet. She pulled a couple cheat grass seeds out of his ear (unrelated but his ear was a little hot-glad we found it before it got terribly infected) and found some little scratches on his eye. We are thinking what happened is the badger bit him very near the eye.

On Wednesday, Sadie and Duke got in a fight with a badger. Luckily I heard the racket and got them called off before it did much damage. Sadie had one bite on her leg and Duke had two on his face. None were bad and they were real close to his nose. So nowhere near his eye. Maybe I overlooked one?

Anyway, the vet put him on Tramadol and an antibiotic eye drop. She also said to give him some asprin. He was doing really well after we left last night. Probably mainly due to the numbing agent she put in his eye.

This morning, he is in a lot of pain again. His eye is nearly swollen shut. :( He rolled Bonny around talking to her pretty good after she twice tried playing with him by biting him on the painful side. Needless to say, they are seperated and will be until this gets cleared up. After his meds he is doing better but obviously still in pain. I don't know if I should call the vet or is it expected to get worse before it gets better? The thing is, I already have a "emergency call" from yesterday as they weren't open, have no money because a recent totally unrelated injury he got, and the vet isn't open today either. I don't want a huge vet bill racking up if I can help it. Of course, if he needs to go, I will not allow money to stop me-just make me reluctant. What do you guys think?

I'm sure if you'd mentioned the fight with the badger in the first post, right off the bat people would suspected a possible injury. In situations like this, it's always important to provide all the information you know for people to work from.

If you have concerns, you should probably call the vet to ask about them. They shouldn't charge you for the phone call, or even for an office visit if it's a follow up from the first one yesterday.

I hope things get better for him soon.

He probably was rubbing the bite and scratched his eye, poor thing. Swelling of the eye lid is not uncommon in these things. They should have given you atropine eye drops for the pain, too. Try calling and ask if you can pick those up without bringing him back in, maybe they can call a prescription in to the pharmacy. As much as possible, keep him in the dark, a blanket over his crate, a darkened room. Light REALLY increases the pain, believe me I know this personally.

Keep him quiet and in a dark place. I have had a scratched cornea myself several times, and they are incredibly painful. Each blink of the eye irritates the laceration.

When you call the vet, ask if you can give him benedryl to slow him down a bit. The good news is that corneal lacerations do heal quickly if protected.

Good luck,

He was doing really well most of today-acting almost normal again. At about 4, the meds wore off and he is in terrible pain again. I called the vet and she said she'd give a different/another painkiller and some antibiotics too because it is so much more swollen today than yesterday. My mom and dad will be picking those up this evening on the way home from town. I gave him his Tramadol a little early but it hasn't seemed to help. Poor boy. :( I hate to see him like this. If he's not better tomorrow, he'll probably be going in again.

I've kept him in the garage with the lights off most of today. The thing is, he doesn't seem sensitive to light at all........

Why is this? Just wondering.......

Yeah, I made the mistake of not going to the dr. when I knew I had an abrasion. I even spent the morning reading the newspaper. And I paid dearly for my hubris.

The next 24 hrs were a blur of pain. I had an HMO at the time, it was flu season or some darn thing, and I spent a couple hours in the waiting room, hoping to be wedged in between people who were having trouble breathing.

By the time I saw the dr., a little more than 36 hours after the initial injury, whatever it was they gave me didn't even take the edge off. I had some leftover prescription narcotic pain reliever at home, took that, spent the next 24 hrs asleep and awoke much better.

I suspect he's made the abrasion worse just from blinking and normal eye movement, and from my personal experience, your best bet is to find a way to have him asleep for a day or so. Follow your vet's advice, of course, but my experience may help you out in knowing what to ask for.

I don't know why superficial eye injuries heal so quickly, but they do, thank goodness.

  • 2 weeks later...

Sorry, I can view posts on my phone but can not answer.

He is doing GREAT!! After getting him on the antibiotics, he began improving nearly instantly. His conjunctiva is still slightly red and very slightly swollen but is getting better every day. It seems to just be taking its time healing.
