Crate training

I was wondering, how old were your pups when they were toilet trained? And how many accidents did they have before they got to that stage?

My puppy is 9.5 weeks old. I got her nearly 2 weeks ago and so far she has had 10 accidents... 2 in the house, and the rest in her puppy pen. Except for the latest... which was in her crate. Why would she go in her crate when she had her puppy pen there and some paper on the ground?

Other than that, she's a great puppy Knows sit already and nearly knows stay.

lol Riven was a year old. When we got her she was an outside dog. Within a week we had her trained and then had an issue with her not going and waiting till she got in the garage at night to poo. So, at the advice of our trainer, since my husband is AGAINST crates, we didnt let her in the garage for a weeks or so.

 

It took 3 days of her holding it, and finally she went outside. Of course, I had to watch her like a hawk to make sure she didnt sneak off to go somewhere else.

 

Now that being said, Im sure that is no help to you. I just like to talk about my dog.

 

Good luck with your puppy though. I know the people on the board will help you tremendously.

Meg is crate trained, and when in her kitchen/paper trained, but in the house off leash she is as inconsistent in placement and alert as she can be. I've only had maybe ten no accident days in the two and a half months we've had her.

 

Please read the following as a person indictment and cautionary tale:

 

WE'RE (Husband and I) fairly regular, we go out with her most of the time, she's with us within eye shot 90% of the time. We keep her on leash or crated about 20% of the time.

i was very lucky when i got brighid at 11 weeks, i camped out the night i collected her in wales. she went to sleep in the crate, woke me up once to go for a pee and that was all the potty training needed for brighid! except one time when she peed in tikki's bed (no idea why she chose there and she didnt ask to go out?) she has never had an accident in the house.

unless you count i'm sooooooo excited i have to wee episodes (which i dont class as house training accidents). we had lots of those in the hallway and whilst attempting to eat the cats!

Jackson was 7wks old when we brought him home. We tried the usual puppy potty training routine to no avail. Then he discovered how to use the doggie door. He never had an accident since! That was when he was about 9 wks old. Now, that said, as I discovered tonight, the problem is that he never learned to hold it! He has always had access to outside so there was never a reason for him to hold it. What did I discover tonight? When your rascal has been playing with the younguns, and you decide to take him to the store with you, a 30min ride, make sure he goes potty FIRST or you WILL return to a wet seat!

 

But I loved on him and told him I was sorry! What a sucker I am!

Too much freedom to go where she decided. You probably let her wander in and out of her crate and puppy pen at will. Crate her for her down time. When you take her out for play or whatever, IMMEDIATELY take her outside to do her business, then let her play or whatnot. Also, a puppy can't hold it as long as a more mature dog. More trips outside.

I've found that 90% of potty training is knowing your dog's typical schedule. The more positive experiences you have outside, the easier things go.

 

Sadie is now 13 weeks and we're doing fairly well now - 3 days in a row w/ no accidents. She's also learning that she can only whine when she needs to go, and that sitting next to the front door is a way to signal us. That part is a little rough still but it's coming along.

 

I read a couple places that most dogs need to go, in hours, the number of months they are old + one. so a 2 month old puppy will need to go at least once every 3 hours. With Sadie, we've taken her our at least every 3 hours (she's 3 months).

 

Pay attention to when your pup tends to have accidents, then anticipate it, take her out before then. If she always has an accident 10 minutes after she eats (most dogs do) then make sure to take her/him out before then.

 

Also, we haven't really been crate training Sadie, she's always within eye-sight, so if she squats in the house, we say a firm 'NO' then physically carry her outside. Usually picking the dog up will make them stop going. Only correct your dog when you catch them in the act like this. Scolding them for accidents you find after the fact doesn't do any good.

Dazzle is crate trained.

 

At first she would have about 1 accident a day but after a few days we figured out when she needed to go out and that was it really.

We got her at 9 wks.
