Maja Posted May 7, 2011 Author Report Share Posted May 7, 2011 The trial and the clinic are now over, and I am very happy about it. Derek is really great, and I learned oodles of stuff. Although Bonnie suffered from a total flank and outrun amnesia, it was good because Derek told me reasons for her dramatic drop in performance and ways to deal with it. Moreover, the advice is something I can follow. Derek inspired many people at the clinic, and he is really great to learn from. The last day (May 3!) we had a fierce winter attack, and only 4 dogs got to herd. After an extremely nerve wracking steep descent in summer-tire-clad vehicles, we continued the theory in a timy conference room of the hotel. It was very interesting. Derek is explaining things with the help of a quiet sheep (Christine) and a clever puppy (Natalia). The sheep was trying to dominate the puppy when she thought no one was looking the meadow May first: The meadow May third: It was also wonderful to meet Christine from these boards! You don't know how glad I was to meet you, your husband, and Jeanny. My thanks to Penny for suggesting the idea! It all turned out really good - a beginning of more . Posted May 8, 2011 Report Share Posted May 8, 2011 Hi Maja, Thank you very much for all, for the invitation, and all the organisation you did, to make this stay in Poland for me, my husband an Jeanny unforgettable. We really enjoyed each minute and do not want to miss one. Even the snowy day in may ! It was really nice to meet you - now i know for sure - i can trust my stomach in the future, which told me before this clinic, that i will meet very nice people in Poland. The Clinic was outstanding !!!!! Derek is such a great trainer (and by the way he and his wife are a very nice couple). It was so great to listen to all this funny stories which happened to him during his long career as judge, sheperd and trialist. I also learned so much from him. Lone and i did great steps forward and i´m very glad i also did the clinic with Lucy, my older bitch. Yesterday and the day before i spent a lot of time to concentrate myself on what we learned and i was able to practice it with my dogs. Things are now going more quieter and much more succesfull. Jeanny took a lot of great pictures ! I saw some of them. She now finishs them on the computer and then i´m sure she puts them to picasa and gives us the link. She´s a little bit busy at the moment but i´m sure it won´t take to long - and you will see, each day will be worth waiting. Maja Posted May 8, 2011 Author Report Share Posted May 8, 2011 Yes, the 4" of snow in May was by special arrangement just for us :D . On Monday, in the evening, I had been practicing in my head, thinking that on Tuesday I will manage to do what I need to do . But, alas! On Wednesday, the lock in my car was frozen, and I had to climb inside through the back. I must say though, in the morning I was terribly depressed because everything was frozen, and on Tuesday my husband told me we had snow on the farm too, and my phone was dead and without electricity I couldn't charge it and ask him about it. So I was sure all of our blueberry flowers were destroyed and the entire corp gone (240 bushes), but when I came back home it turned out that the frost was only in the mountains and the bushes are still full of flowers, in spite of the snow. I am so glad I saw Lone in real life, she is so nice! Lucy is sweet too. Lone made such great progress during the clinic, because you were able to implement Derek's instructions right away. I have delayed understanding of things, so we are only now implementing things I learned. It's so nice to see Bonnie work better. I can't figure why a dog often shows more style when the handler does a better job handling? Maja Posted May 9, 2011 Author Report Share Posted May 9, 2011 No, these are Polish heath sheep, but there are similarities, they are born all balck and then get brown or silver, silver being the "real' color the only one accepted for pedigreed wrzosowskas. You mean "iffy" concerning weather? The summers are warm, actually they are very, very hot in the mountains, but there are higher possibilities of sudden heavy rains than elsewhere in Poland. Setting the date right is tricky. The trial was carried by Marta and Piotr, I wasn't there. Marta is a real super trooper, and Piotr is very good at natural disaster management, which showed on the last day. Piotr also has a lovely field for trials. Maja Posted May 10, 2011 Author Report Share Posted May 10, 2011 Most of the participants stayed at a hotel whose owner has Polish Lowland Sheepdog. It was very nice, because the dogs had a lot of freedom in the hotel. On the second day the lady asked me "why do you keep your dog on a leash all the time?", and I said "out of politeness". So from then on Bonnie was off the leash. She behaved well, and I only had to stop her from doing into the kitchen (I wonder why? ) . So especially for Penny T. - the Polish Lowlanders after a lovely May walk in the sun snow: it is dark because we had no eccentricity after that d@#@# blizzard. maja Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

I don't recall this distance. Now that's more what I remember, the no-flank, no-distance puppy: Flank? Never heard of it! Bonnie the Flanker? But, Penny, spelling is in they eye of the penholder, I don't know how many times I looked at that word before I noticed :lol: . (When I wrote my first email to Derek after agonizing over the content, I finally clicked "send". Maja Posted May 27, 2011 Author Report Share Posted May 27, 2011 I realized it's an announcement only forum so if the Administrator could move the topic somewhere more appropriate I would be very grateful. Yesterday, I had an opportunity to test some of Derek's advice about dealing with a dog that has a dramatic drop in performance away from home (Bonnie at the clinic had no flanks, no outrun, so-so obedience). We went to a farmer's, new, non-dog broke sheep - a bunch of mean ewes with lambs, new place, the whole shebang. Bonnie tried to slice the very first flank and that was all - the rest of the time she was perfect in executing what I told her. So my hopes for passing the trial-qualifying test are a bit up again.
