OK, it's 30 out and still raining somewhat...I found this site and link and am appaled at what this pup has gone through and what the "breeder" and others involved did. I didn't see anything on AKC's site as to whether or not they are involved though.

The main person named was/is a member of these boards too. I almost have to give the owner credit for going to the lenghts she has to find her puppy!

Yes, I suppose you could call this trolling today!

Although Wildblue seems to have passed "inspection" for care of her dogs by these notes, that was not the first mention of neglect. In Jon Katz's book he talks about how Devon was shipped to him from that kennel and arrived matted and filthy. Hmmmmm.....

Awful about the missing Ice though. There is nothing worse than not knowing. And even if the situation was bad at Wildblue (and I am not assuming it was!) there is no excuse for stealing a dog and taking the law into your own hands.

I'm scared to ask ...

At the moment, I have three remarkable dogs I love to death, all quite different: Rose, the working dog, Izzy, the Soul Dog who brought me to hospice work, and Lenore, the Hound of Love. Rose came from a herding line in Colorado, Izzy was rescued off a farm near Cambridge, N.Y., and Lenore came from a wonderful breeder of Labs, Gretchen Pinkel of Kee-Pin Labradors.

Rose is not from Wildblue, right?

Where is Devon now?

And where was Orson from?

Rose is not a Wildblue to the best of my knowledge...

Devon - not sure where he went

Orson - isn't this the one he killed?

according to Katz himself both Rose and Orson are from wildblue

The three dogs in my current household all came from breeders,

Rose and Orson from Wildblue Border Collies in Falcon, Colorado,

taken from here:

http://www.randomhouse.com/catalog/display...mp;view=excerpt

this makes me laugh

When it came to Rose, I already knew I was buying a farm with

enough acreage for a flock of sheep, so I wanted a dog with working

lines, one I could train to herd on my own, away from the oppressive

dos and don’ts of the herding and training worlds. I wanted to make my

own mistakes, experience my own triumphs, work free of scrutiny and

second-guessing. I wanted to trust my dog, give her the chance to do

her work by following her instincts.

really? wildblue is "working lines"? teehee

I take this part: "...one I could train to herd on my own, away from the oppressive dos and don’ts of the herding and training worlds. I wanted to make my own mistakes, experience my own triumphs, work free of scrutiny and second-guessing" to mean, "I want to fail because I'm stupid."

That would be like me writing, "I want to learn to ride horses, free from the oppressive dos and don'ts of previous riders. I want to make my own falls, injure my own horses, experience brief moments on top of the horse and do it all free of anyone calling me a damn idiot!"

Sometimes, stupidity becomes criminal. How could anyone buy a book from someone that stupid?

I think you're correct Mary.

As for the training thing, sounds like hubris to me. He doesn't want people to see him make mistakes because of course he knows better how to do it than anyone else possibly could. After all, isn't the best way to start a young dog to just leave it in with the sheep for some period of time and let them all sort it out themselves?

Devon/Orson shipped from Wildblue filthy, matted, and terrified. Euthanized later by Katz

Homer and Rose are also from Wildblue, bought as puppies. Homer was given away after Devon/Orson made his life so miserable that even the idiot Katz noticed and gave him away.

Rose was still with him last I read, but he has stated before he plans to give her to whoever gets his sheep if he stops with the farm.

:D Or, as one all-breed "trainer" here in SoCal says, he turns the young dog loose with sheep (he's outside the pen) so they can "work through their prey drive"!!

You'd have thought he would have followed Katz's example and just turned the dog(s) in with the sheep, so they could work it out even quicker!

Geesh...

I think that Orson and Devon are the same dog... no? Just renamed between book 1 and book 2? PTS for biting.

Mary

Ah, you can tell I don't read his books

So, the allegations may have merit even though this kennel passed the inspections.....still doesn't give one the right to steal a dog though.

"PTS for biting" and "euthanized" are inappropriate euphemisms for what Katz did to his dog. Katz was too lazy and too cheap to get Orson the help he needed, made him live through years of unnecessary fear and anxiety, made millions of dollars off his story, and then killed Orson when Orson's purpose was done, all the while making mealymouthed and disingenuous claims that he had "tried everything." It is perfectly possible to euthanize an anxious dog out of compassion for that dog, but that is not what Katz did.

Since he had the vet do it, as opposed to shooting him himself (I'm honestly surprised he didn't try it - he's that stupid) I don't think "euthanized" is a euphamism - just a fact. Prior treatment (appalling!) and self centered rationalizations on his part don't change the words on the vet chart. The death was humane. The life wasn't.

Regarding Wildblue. IF Orson/Devon was that bad when they sent him they should have never sold (given?) him to Katz. No breeder with any sense of morals or responsibility puts a damaged dog out in the pet home on purpose.

IF it was Katz that made O/D crazy, it says even more about Wildblue that they would sell him 2 more puppies.

Either way Wildblue smells like the bottom of a dairy farmer's boot. But as Karen pointed out, theft is not a solution.

To be fair, I do think that Orson/Devon came to Katz an abnormal dog to start with. In fact, I think (IIRC) that the original owner gave him to Katz b/c she'd read the book about the two labradors Katz owned, and thought that Katz could provide a potentially good home for a crazy dog.

Having said that, my dog was abnormal when he came home, and he's still kind of abnormal now, almost 4 years later. I manage him - don't let strangers stick their hands through my fence, don't leave him outside unattended, carefully monitor people and pets we encounter - and we have a perfectly content life.

(This is not an attempt to defend this breeder. She is breeding for the wrong reason entirely. With that said...)

Lenajo, I get what you're saying, really I do. However, she sold the dog to Katz ... and even if she became aware that he was causing issues with the dog, what can she do? I think legally she doesn't have many options. Or does she?

Legally I have no idea if she could get Devon back, and I fully believe had she tried Katz would have said so. I don't think it was ever an issue for her or she would have not sold 2 more dogs to the same situtation.

She could *not* have not had an idea about what was happening unless she lives in a bubble. It was all in the first book - well before Homer and Rose ever entered the seen.

And really Jodi....do you think if Katz was your dog's buyer/adopter, you would have some idea of the problems or situation with dog #1, before you sent him 2 more? Katz is an open book when it comes to announcing all the stupid things he's doing. All you had to do as a breeder is say "how's it going with Orson/Devon"? and you'd have had more information than you ever needed to make an informed decision.

Breeders make mistakes and sell to good puppies to absolutely foolish people and worse. Happen once - so sorry for you! Happen twice...no sympathy available. Happen thrice.....get'r girls!

From what I read it all smells like the farmers boots. Dogs needlessly dying of parvo, stollen dogs, irresponsible breeders and owners. I feel sorry for all the dogs caught up in this.

Remember that stolen (rescued) border collie Katz had briefly?

This tale sounds similar. The inference I draw is that one of the three dogs did indeed die and the other two were hidden away either as an act of mercy or to use for breeding, possibly both.

  • 5 years later...

Rose i believe was from Wildblue. Orson and Devon are the same dog. His original name was Devon but after despising that name, Jon Katz changed his name to Orson. Orson has since been put down due to biting three people. Rose has since passed away as well.

Devon - not sure where he went

Orson - isn't this the one he killed?
