Back conformation of 5 month old puppy

Recommended Posts

Hi all, I have a nearly 6 month old puppy and I noticed that her back is sometimes a bit arched as she stands, it looks weird to me. Is that a roached back? I am wondering if there is a possibility that she grows out of it, and most importantly if it can cause any problems in the future. Should/can I take any precautions? She is my first dog so I am not what you would call an experienced owner and would be grateful for any opinions. :)

If she is not in discomfort, I would guess that she is going through an awkward stage -- front end higher than back, or back end higher than front, or curved back or legs too long for body, or..... She should even out.

If you are worried, you can always bring her to a certified physio vet.

I would have a trusted vet take a look who will do a good physical. Specifically i would take note of urine and stool - regular schedule, not asking to go out more, look normal ect. Then check anal glands. After that I would ask vet to feel liver, kidneys, spleen...watch the way she walks, runs, sits...

When she shakes does she do it from head all the way to tip of tail? Sometimes if they pull a muscle or have a problem they will not shake all the way through, where they stop is usually the area that is bothering them.

Yes might be nothing but if mine I would want a set of experienced hands and eyes on her just for my own peace of mind.

Thank you all for the replies!

At the moment I don't have a vet I would turn to with trust, but I am in search for one. I will ask next week anyway when I have to get dewormer (it might worth to mention that we live in Central Europe in a rural area and I started to feel not so good about the most comfortable option and also was advised by other owners to turn to a specialist in the capital).

She doesn't show any discomfort or other symptoms I can notice, otherwise I would have mentioned. She is a lively, delightful personality with good nerves and quite a bit of character. Her movement can resemble to a rubber ball... :D Probably no need to mention also how clever she is. :)

I hope it really is just a stage, I know it is like that with horses, it only worth to look at foals conformationwise when they are born and after 3 years, in between they can look pretty unproportional.

I had the chance to have a look several times this morning thanks to the pouring rain, her shaking seemed ok to me, although the order was not very specific, might have started with the head and finished with the butt, but was a bit like everything at the same time. Also I am not sure if the tail was included.

So to me everything else looks ok, but in all honesty I don't have experience or another dog to compare to.

I understand your not having a vet just handy to whom to take her right now, but when you are able to do so I would echo other recommendations to do that. It may indeed be nothing to worry about, but if she were mine I would want her checked out just in case. Best of luck!

Hi. I have a 6 month old puppy . His has had to have a hind leg removed .which is his left leg . He now has a cracked ball joint in his right hind leg x he is walking on his front two with a sling. I’ve been to the vets and they have said he could have it removed and be in no pain but would need putting down as he only has two legs and the vet had never seen a dog with two legs anybody point me in the right direction or for a private vet . On what todo I’ve spoke with the vets and there getting a second opinion because I don’t want to put him down at this moment in time as he is only 5 months old and he could live with wheels or a frame .  Just don’t want to make a decision and it be the wrong one. And help or advice would be brilliant .
