First Time Boarding Gina BC

Recommended Posts

Gina our BC is a little over seven months old and we need to be at a out of town funeral and will be gone about 4 days. Rather than taking her on a 10 hour road trip and keeping her kenneled for 6 / 7 hours at a time we would like to take her to doggie day care here that does boarding. Is she to young for this? Gina gets along well with most other dogs, and loves playtimes.

Suggestions?

Definitely not too young.

I am assuming she is up to date on her vaccinations. And you will most likely be visitiing kennels ahead of time to find one that you trust.

For my pups, I think it is a valuable life skill to be able to stay at a kennel without too much stress. I prefer to introduce the kennel by 'boarding' for one night - even if I don't go out of town. A trial run.

One pup was 6 months old and stayed at a friend's house for 3 days, and then I put him in a commercial kennel for a night a couple of months later. Another pup was boarded at a commercial kennel for a night when he was 7 months old, and again for 4 nights when he was about 11 months old.

  • 2 weeks later...

Gina will be 8 months old in a few more days. I picked her up at Doggie Day care/ Boarding this afternoon. They said she got along great and made new friends but was tired. She had DD Care morning and afternoon I was concerned she over did it. Seems little kind of stand offish not the loving dog we took over, maybe she was just tired and needed time to readjust. Will see in the morning.

I had taken her over a couple times before we left to let her get acquainted with the place and staff.

Gibbs has been going to the same excellent boarding facility for years. He's always tired and crashes when I get him home. I think it's normal.

He shows no sign of not wanting to go into the facility when I drop him off. Compared to his regular routine at home, there's a lot of activity.

And Gibbs will also do somewhat the same thing when he gets home from agility or scent class. He's worked hard, done some new stuff, and he just wants to veg out for a while.

I wouldn't worry about it unless she continues to be stand-offish.

Ruth & Gibbs ~ who lets me know when he needs some space.

Yes she seems to be coming back to the old Gina we know and love. Went out to the shop with me early this morning and got into the shop kennel with its really cushy bed and decided to stay..... I got her out and in the house and she is waiting for mom wake up time!!
