Car watching/chasing

Recommended Posts

Hello all, we have our 16 week old BC, Loki, he has a thing for trying to chase cars whilst he's on the lead, is there any way we can teach him not to do so? As it would obviously be extremely dangerous if he was off the lead!

Many thanks!

Work on teaching him to watch you and other attention exercises.

Probably the best method (in addition to the above) is Leslie McDevitt's "Look at That" game. It's in her Control Unleashed book (I hear the puppy version is best), and there's lots of info about it on the internet.

This topic was also discussed here just recently, so perhaps a search of the Boards' archives would be helpful.

Hi LokiBC. Sorry to hear that you are having this issue with your pup. Sadly, it's not an uncommon issue with the breed and there are many, many threads about car chasing on these forums. As GentleLake suggested, a quick search of the archives will give you a ton of reading material.

However, I noticed when I did a quick search that somewhere around 2008 the answers given to this question began to change quite a bit. Pre-2008 answers largely seemed to advocate "Come to Jesus" moments (extremely hard corrections) with the pup while post-2008 answers offered more counterconditioning and desensitization solutions. I tend to lean towards the positive approach BUT with an issue as serious and life threatening as car chasing I can also appreciate trying to squash the behavior quickly and firmly.

I thought I'd share a few links of good threads covering this topic. Hopefully this will be a decent place for you to start. Good luck and let us know how it's going!!
