Elwood
So I may have to do a trip from Qld to VICTORIA in November with my boy. My concerns travelling alone is how to secure him when I need to stop for petrol, loo and food. I obviously can't leave him in the car and am very concerned about leaving him tied up in the shade with water. The police said I should tie hi to the back of my car, yet if I can't back into a shady spot this will be impossible. I need tips to prevent him being stolen. I've thought about making a cable collar that locks and then tie him with a cable and pad lock. Is this my only choice????
Lawgirl
Not sure if your dog is crate trained, but if he is, maybe use a folding wire crate, padlock the doors and use a bike lock/bike chain to tie the crate to something? You can cover the crate for shade and put water in there for him.
Maralynn
I travel a lot with my dogs. They are securely crated inside of my car. For quick stops I leave the windows down a few inches and try to park in the shade. I've never had an issue.
waffles
Is it illegal to leave a dog in the car where you are? Just getting gas and going to the bathroom, I can't imagine not being able to leave the dog locked in the car. Crate him in a plastic sided crate in the car and no one should know he is in there or cover it lightly with a thin sheet if you are worried the car will be broken into. Unless you are stopping in high crime areas I can't imagine the car being broken into while running in to use the bathroom or grab some food to go. Hooking him up to the back bumper sounds like a terrible idea as you could forget he is there and pull away. No one thinks they could possibly forget but it does happen (like sleeping babies left in cars).
Elwood
Yes it is illegal to leave a dog in a car here in Australia, and rightfully so as it can reach over 100degrees C in 5 mins during summer, which is when. I travelling. Bike locking his crate is a great idea. I'll go with that. Thanks ladies that's a very safe and logical idea since he will be in his crate anyway. waffles
I suspected that might be the case. I would think more places would allow dogs inside then. Here, there are many gas stations that have bathrooms you access from the outside of the building. Not sure how common that is in your area. But That way you could bring him in with you and of course while filling up you can just hold onto him while you get gas. What do you see other people do? Is it common to see dogs chained to cars or crates sitting in parking lots?
Riika
If it's just a gas station, they may allow you to take you dog in with you. I don't what your laws are on dogs in food establishments though.
Elwood
I wish I could take him in, he is certainly a lot cleaner than most kids today. Here in Oz it's illegal unless it's a seeing eye dog or alert dog. I was thinking I may be able to make up a vest for him like an alert dog Seriously tho I think the crate idea is best for us. Lawgirl
I am glad you like the idea Elwood. I admit that when I travel with my dogs, I usually have someone with me and we take turns, or else I stop at a public toilet in a country town and take them in with me. I have never had anyone object, but do not usually see anyone else.
Elwood
Here most people break the law and leave their dogs in their cars, which is really stupid as the heat inside a car with the windows all down can reach 100 degrees C in 5 mins. Most people tho with dogs always seem to be travelling with someone and have the other person hold the dog while they go inside.
Elwood
It is also legal for a bystander to smash a car window to rescue a dog or child if they believe that dog or child is in danger.
Elwood
It's the same here, if the loo is outdoor aces sable I always take him into the stall with me , I've never faced an objection to this.
