Donald McCaig
Dear Sheepdoggers, About the same as a new 4wd gator. Which is more useful to the stockman longer? Donald McCaig
Smalahundur
With all due respect Donald, I personally don´t think that is a good comparison. Because that price has not to do directly with the capacity for normal every day farm work. This is a price because of high hopes for top trial success and not unlikely likely as a breeding prospect. In my opinion speculation (and that word is not meant to be negative)..
olivehill
I don't begrudge anyone the money they wish to spend on whatever it is that suits them. If you've earned the money, you should feel free to spend it where and how you please, assuming doing so harms no one else. That said, I (speculatively) agree with Smalahunder. It's highly unlikely Bob is destined to be a non-trialing farmer/rancher's right hand man. There are perfectly good and effective canine employees available to farmers and ranchers for a considerably lesser investment. Setting all that aside and in the spirit of playing along however, even if he were headed for relative obscurity as a non-trialing/non-breeding ranch hand a gator is not an all too favorable comparison. I know of many 30+ year old side-by-sides still in regular use on farms, most Border Collies are dead at roughly half that.
Sue R
I rather wonder if he isn't going to one of the kennels that sells high-priced pups to the ignorant. That would be a shame.

Maja
12 months of training went into that dog - I commend a person who is willing to appreciate that out of their pocket. At this stage, I think not many would be up for sale. Darinka's grandfather was sold at an auction. And in the program it was pretty clear that the owner knew who was going to buy it. The person who won the bid went to the farm and watched the dog a couple of days before the auction. Maja

NorthfieldNick
Or is it like the purebred/show livestock auctions here where the buyer is pretty much known beforehand, the price gets driven up to make a story, and a previously-agreed upon, more reasonable amount of money changes hands? Or the agreement is "$300 cash non-refundable, $9700 rebate."

Maja
Yes, 12 month of training and you get a 'reasonable' $300.00 for a dog you paid 350 pounds for.

Yes - but a piece of machinery can't leave behind it's replacement when it finally goes to the junk heap in the sky.
