RIP Echo

My heart is so heavy right now.

Tonight we lost our sweet little beagle, my children's beloved dog, our wee Echo. They chose her one year ago after looking at several different litters. She was their cherished friend.

Echo, for all her sweetness, was an escape artist. Earlier tonight, she somehow managed a sneak escape from the house (I am guessing she squeezed out the door when my son went outside, and he didn't notice her). She was hit by a car as she ran across the road, and killed instantly.

I cannot even process this fully right now. We are all in such a terrible state, so crushed and sad. My children are beside themselves with grief. Before going to bed, they planned a little funeral for Echo, to be held tomorrow morning.

Oh, my heart! It is hard to breathe. I never thought my senior dog would outlive my children's one-year-old pup. I can hardly stand the sorrow I'm feeling right now.

Rest in peace, dear Echo. You were a good dog and we loved you so much. Keep it real, little buddy, until we meet again.

Echo deserves a bit more of a tribute than my original post gave her.

She was the sweetest little dog imaginable. As our senior dog aged, my children became fearful that he would die (he's still with us), and we decided to get a pup for the kids to grow up with. Not a working dog, not a dog for Mama - just a friend for the kids to love. After reading through several different sites listing the top "family dogs", we decided to get a beagle. Our senior dog is a coonhound, and the kids wanted one that looked like him in miniature form. We visited the Humane Society first, then looked at several different litters. I gave my input, but wanted to let the kids make the choice as much as possible. In the end, they chose Echo.

Echo was so tiny when we brought her home at 10wks, of course much smaller than our coonhound or BC had been. Even full grown, Echo was 15lbs, about the height & length of Juno at 8wks. Echo's only job on this farm was to be a friend, and she filled that role with gusto. She loved my children well. She snuggled with them, played with them, put up with their games and enjoyed their walks. She was dumb as a bag of bricks and never learned more than a simple "sit", even after a few different obedience classes and lengthy efforts on our part at home. She never even came to recognise her own name, or respond when being called. It didn't matter, though - Echo didn't need to be smart. She just needed to let the kids love her, and they did.

Echo was very special to all of us. We assumed she would be at the kids' sides as they grew, a friend for all stages of childhood and adolescence, someone to snuggle with when feeling sad and to confide in. Someone to share secrets with and a cute face to brighten dark days. You know, all the things a child's dog is good for. My children are absolutely heartbroken over Echo's death.

The older two children helped their daddy lay Echo in a box for tomorrow's funeral, and placed her little dress-up outfit inside with her. Our 2-yr-old son didn't understand. He looked into the box, and suddenly he knew. "Mama," he said, "Echo broken. Not come back anymore." then we all started crying again.

She was only with us for one year, but she was loved well and we gave her the best we could. I hope she is alright, wherever she is now.

Run free little Echo.

Please don't hold yourself or your children at blame. It is so hard when we lose a dog to such a tragedy like that. The blessing is that she didn't suffer long or hard. Time will fill the huge hole in all of your hearts. Give your kids a hug and let them hug you.

Thank you all for your kind words. The kids gave Echo her funeral this morning. She is buried at the back of our vegetable gardens with a ring of field stones outlining her grave. The kids are on the lookout for the perfect large stone to create a headstone with. The funeral really helped the kids to process everything, and they shared a lot of great memories of Echo. Of course we are still very sad, but I am grateful for the opportunity to connect with my kids and mourn together.

Oh Lyndsay, I am so sorry. We lost our first BC under very similar circumstances about 10 months ago. She was only 10 months old, but just the sweetest thing and we were soooo attached to her. She had never gone down to the road, but one beautiful, sunny January afternoon, when I went inside to get ready to milk (we have goats too), she wandered down our almost-quarter-mile-long driveway and immediately got hit. She died in my arms just as we got to the vets. It is just heartbreaking to lose such a sweet soul so young. I'm glad you and your family were able to connect. My heart goes out to you.

I am so sorry to hear about Echo. I can only imagine how hard it is for the children. Your children sound like they are very loving...maybe they can write some stories about Echo as a way to remember her.

Run free at the Bridge Echo..

So sorry for the tragic loss of your Echo. There's really no good way to lose a cherished friend, but the suddenness of his passing makes it so much harder to wrap your head around. Peace and comfort to you and your family.
