Herding in NJ

Recommended Posts

The advice you will receive on these boards will send you in the direction of someone who trials USBCHA, works real stock in real situations, and is not training for AKC "herding". There have been a number of topics discussing why this is so, and you may have already read them and understand why. You can use the "search" function at the top of the page to find pertinent topics.

Try www.nebca.net which is the website for Northeast Border Collie Assn. It includes your area and is a strong, terrific association. Several good people are located in NJ. Look in NEBCA under "breeders" for Gene Shenenger, where you will find his contact information. Perhaps he either gives lessons or can point you in the right direction for someone within a reasonable distance for you.

Many trainers will expose a young dog to stock, just a few minutes at a time and maybe once a month or so, until around a year of age or so, or when the dog is ready to begin training. It will be totally dependent on the maturity of the dog (mental and physical) and what is suitable for the particular dog. A competent trainer will be able to do this with suitable sheep and know how and when to start the dog.

Best wishes!
