5Bordercollies Posted August 25, 2015 Report Share Posted August 25, 2015 I've seen a few pucs of dogs here wearing the julius K9 harness. I was wondering what your thoughts are on them? Do you like it? How close to escape proof is it? It seems to be easy to put on the dog, is it? I'm looking for a good harness for my youngest, something easy to put on. gcv-border Posted August 25, 2015 Report Share Posted August 25, 2015 I have a JuliusK9 harness - mainly because I think it looks cool. A similar brand is the Diamond harness. Easy to put on, but would not use it with a dog that pulls. I would not trust it to contain a crazy dog, but luckily have not had to test that aspect of the harness since my dog walks well on leash. CptJack Posted August 25, 2015 Report Share Posted August 25, 2015 I do use it on a dog who is sometimes crazy, but I make sure it contains her by using a coupler to attach her collar to the harness and then hook the leash to the coupler. I would not use it alone with a dog who gets a bit nutty or who pulls - there are just two straps (one across the chest and one around the ribcage) and it's far from escape proof. I like the harness. It's well made, it looks good, and I like the patches/ability to change the patches up. The look and patches are primarily why I got it. I also really like the handle, a lot. It is very, very easy to put on and off - to the point that I'm considering using it for agility with this particular dog, instead of using a slip lead. It's that fast/easy. Root Beer Posted August 25, 2015 Report Share Posted August 25, 2015 I don't know if the Julius harness is like the Brilliant K9 Harness, but I highly recommend the Brilliant. It is the only harness I have ever used on Bandit that he not only doesn't fight, but he adores putting it on. It slips right over his head and then I just need to do one simple buckle.He seems very comfortable in it and we use it all the time. I'd have one for all three dogs if they weren't rather pricey. But it was definitely worth it for him. I use it with him because I like a loose leash when the leash is on the collar, but when we are out and about "at ease" I don't care if he goes to the end of the leash. So, we use the harness unless I want heelwork. And it's very secure. No worries about escape. Not that he is trying to escape - even if I drop the leash, he stays right with me, but I wouldn't hesitate to use it on a dog about whom I was worried about escape. Sekah Posted August 25, 2015 Report Share Posted August 25, 2015 I have a BK9 and it's... okay. I find it's difficult to fit well on my dog, though I see it fitting very nicely on other dogs. Can't speak for it being difficult to get out of, since my dog doesn't pull houdini acts, but it's easy to put on. It's also supposed to be a no-pull type design since it's designed to put pressure below the ribs if the leash goes taut. (Mine isn't much of a puller either though.) Juliuses tend to sit more forward. Neither are supposed to interfere much with movement, but I think BK9 is supposed to be a bit better since it doesn't restrict behind the forelegs. CptJack Posted August 25, 2015 Report Share Posted August 25, 2015 Oh. I should also say that the fit on my dog is possibly relevant to the ease with which I can see her escaping. My dog is really, really narrow but really deep chested. That makes the fit of pretty much any harness ever a bit strange, no matter how many points of adjustment I get. gcv-border Posted August 25, 2015 Report Share Posted August 25, 2015 Brilliant harnesses advertise that they are better for the narrower-chested dogs - a dig at the Julius K9. But a couple of years ago, Julius K9's newer design is supposed to be more streamlined for the narrower-chested dogs. The way I see it, it's 6 of one, half dozen of the other. I bought the Julius K9 because I was at an agility trial attended by a JuliusK9 vendor so she was able to fit my dog. I must admit that I prefer some of the colors of the Brilliant harnesses though. And, yes, the interchangeable patches were also a draw. IIRC, there were comments on the FB group 'Canine Conditioning' in which several people did not like the design of either of these harnesses (Brilliant or Julius) because they felt they put too much pressure on X (I forget exactly but I think it was under the armpits). As someone who does have one said, I think the Julius just "looks cool" especially with the personalized side tags. It might be fine for a dog that does not pull, but pulling will definitely put pressure on the shoulder joint in the wrong place. I have used the "Original Fleece Lined Dog Harness" as sold at Clean Run for many years. One dog was in-between sizes, so I cut the shoulder strap, overlapped it about an inch, and it is perfect now (as viewed and approved by Chris Zink!). That said, I don't know how a dog could get out of one of these. I like it as one doesn't need to lift the dog's leg(s) to get it on. It simply goes over the head, and side straps come up and fasten on top. I've even used it (knowing it wasn't meant for this purpose) as a seat belt attachment (not recommended, just saying!). 5Bordercollies Posted August 26, 2015 Author Report Share Posted August 26, 2015 Thanks for the replies. I'm basically looking firstly for a harness that's easy to put on/ take off. Uses will be walking/ normal everyday use. But also for training on stock. I'm hoping to start Meg on the goats this summer. We will start in a confined area, but hoping to move up to the more open camp where the goats sleep. He hates all harnesses, but this one doesn't seem to impede his movement during flyball or agility practice. However, it's ill-fitted around his chest (too loose, he was between sizes), so that probably comtributes to how much he can move.
