Outrun Press is pleased to announce our latest book (which has taken us nearly two years of hard work to complete!). Entitled TOP TRAINERS TALK ABOUT STARTING A SHEEPDOG, the book brings together interviews with many of the best working border collie trainers in North America and the United Kingdom, who share their methods for introducing young border collies to livestock. Trainers include Bill Berhow, Kate Broadbent, Carol Campion, Scott Glen, Bobby Henderson, David Henry, Julie Hill, Carla King, Kathy Knox, Lyle Lad, Beverly Lambert, Amanda Milliken, Barbara Ray, Derek Scrimgeour, Patrick Shannahan, Jeanne Weaver, and Tom Wilson. We're pretty excited about it! For more information, go to the following link:

Heather and Sally,

I know that you both have worked very hard on this book.... heck, David alone had a lot of edits on his interview, I can't imagine the edits you guys have done for seventeen interviews! We are looking forward to reading it and will order our copy tomorrow!

Thanks again for all your hard work!

Good news, Heather and Sally!

Another of your wonderful ideas has come to fruition!

I am most eager to see the methods and practices all the trainers have in common as opposed to the differences between them! That for me will be the most insightful!

Thanks for the kind words, everyone--Sally and I are pretty excited to push the book from the nest at last! But Christine, you don't need to order a book; we'll be sending all of the contributors a free copy, as thanks for giving so much of their time and expertise to make the book as useful as possible to those of us struggling along with our training projects. Without you all, there would have been no book!

Hello everyone,

I saw Heather yesterday at a sheepdog trial, and I was able to purchase a copy of the book directly from her (lucky for me!!!). I have quickly looked through the book, and I am quite impressed with both the content and the format. Way to go, Heather, Sally, and all the contributors! This book focuses on starting sheepdogs, and I hope that this will be the first in a series of training books published by Outrun Press. Future topics could be advanced training, problem solving, trialing tips, etc.

Regards to all,

nancy

I got mine in the mail late last week, got a chance to read some in between kid's rides at a Combined test last weekend. IT WAS A COLD dreary day, funny how all my 'fun' revolves around being outside...makes a warm truck and a good read all the more cozy!

OH MY GOLLY, is this a good book. I couldn't read but so much, it was too much to take in! I loved the tone of it, I could see the people and feel their personalities coming through, and the questions were on target and so appropriate, the answers and follow-up insightful and usable. I'm going to have so much fun dog-earring this thing, and it's like having dinner at a clinic with them, getting to know them better, what's gotten each one to where they are, things I might have asked, but the things I should have.

This is a must have for anyone starting with stockdogs, and for those like me who have found that the more I learn, the less I know! Thanks for giving us this wonderful book!

I just finished this book last week.

For someone like myself who has over 10 years experience with Border Collies on agility, but not with herding, I gained a good overall sense of how to approach basic concepts, such as how and when to check for herding readiness, methods for teaching the outrun, drive, flanking, and shedding, as well as applying whistles.

Plus, it was especially nice for me to read about David Henry's thoughts and methods, since my Jinx is sired by his McCloud who is referenced in the book.

Highly recommended and a good addition to my herding books, DVDs, and audio CDs.

While I'm recovering from my 3 broken ribs, I have more time to read again (I knew there was an upside to this!) I just started reading this book. From what I've read so far, I would recommend it. I don't have any stockdogs (yet) so it is fascinating to see the different approaches people take in training their dogs.

I really enjoyed it, I keep it close at hand and re-read bits of it here and there. I especially liked the section by Bev Lambert.
