Kit Posted March 19, 2006 Report Share Posted March 19, 2006 How much fur can one dog loose during shedding season? Kit has "clumps" of fur, looks like the undercoat shedding. Its all over the furniture and floor. She reminds me of "pig pen" from the Peanuts, instead of dirt it's fur. Any thing she brushes up against gets coated with black fur. Is this common with BC's? trailrider Posted March 19, 2006 Report Share Posted March 19, 2006 I think it is pretty common with most living dogs. Those stuffed ones shed much little and they don`t need brushing. How often do you brush out all the loose hair? I have 6 dogs in the house right now, and yes there is hair around, but i never signed any contract when I moved here that I would let dog hair interfere with my dog activities, so I just let it lay there wherever it wants to go, and clean up every month or so. Kit Posted March 19, 2006 Author Report Share Posted March 19, 2006 We have an Old English Sheep dog that requires alot of grooming, I do not mind it but I was concerned if this was normal. The vet that we got our BC from said the grooming would not be as much as our OE. We are working on the brushing part, she is a rescue dog that does not like to brushed. I realize that all dogs shed, she just has areas where she is shedding more, it is comming out in clumps. Its been in the past week when I have noticed it more. Allie Oop Posted March 19, 2006 Report Share Posted March 19, 2006 'Tis the season. The undercoat often starts to shed out this time of the year. A lot of BCs have an amazing amount of fluff that makes its way onto the floor, furniture, your clothes, etc., etc. (My own BC doesn't seem to have a lot of undercoat to blow and has not started the spring shed, but my previous dog lost prodigious amounts of fluffy undercoat several times a year. I often thought that if I could gather it all up and stuff pillows or something with it I could sell them and make a fortune. ) Several folks here have recently purchased the Dyson Animal Vacuum to aid in keeping the flying fur under control. Also, try using a rake type brush to get the clumps out before it makes its way to your floor. [Edited to Add] Clumps of fur during seasonal sheds is normal for a BC. Clumps with skin attached or "hot spots", sores or red areas of skin is not. Also, if the dog is brush-shy, start slowly and gently from a more casual position (sitting, maybe). (We have owned a Dyson Pet for 2 years ....3 cats, now 2 dogs it is very well used) We live in MinneSNOWta and spring is right around the corner, pretty soon it will be mud season. I am glad to hear that it is common for some dogs to have this much shedding. Being a first time BC owner is ongoing learning experience. You cannot find all the awnsers in books. Tess has no undercoat and Keegan gets a slight undercoat, so we don't experience the major blowing of coat. However, the Dyson is very handy with the cats who shed like CRAZY!!!!! Dal & Mad's Mom Posted March 19, 2006 Report Share Posted March 19, 2006 I've seen balls of white hair rolling across my kitchen all ready. Dal is a rough coat So I'm sure there is a nice undercoat there. One advice thing though is the wild bird love BC hair to line their nests.
