Barbara Carpenter

Recommended Posts

I haven't seen this posted widely anywhere, so I am posting it here. This information came through the working sheepdog group on Facebook.

"Barbara Carpenter died peacefully in her sleep last night [April 20]."

I had the great pleasure of meeting Mrs. Carpenter when I traveled to the UK for work in 2005. Thanks to David Rees, who escorted me around over the weekend when I was free from my work commitments, I got to visit Pastors Hill and take tea with Mrs. Carpenter. I had National Sheepdog Champions and Blue Riband of the Heather with me, and Mrs. Carpenter graciously inscribed them for me. I have some lovely photos of her, her dogs, and her home that I will always cherish, not to mention the beautiful little ceramic hen with chicks that she gifted to me before we left her home that day.

Mrs. Carpenter's work had tremendous influence, and she will be greatly missed. Her incredible kindness to people like me, whom she didn't know, but whom dropped in on her pretty much out of the blue, speaks to a character that we could all aspire too.

Godspeed Mrs. Carpenter. I hope you are enjoying sheep and sheepdogs in heaven.

She was a wonderful, extremely knowledgable, sharing advocate for the working Border Collie. An amazing woman with an amazing mind and an amazing dedication.

I'd like to thank her for the legacy she has left in her life and her writing.

Thank you, Julie, for bringing this news to the boards.

Dear Friends,

It was a chilly night and we were drinking tea before the gas fire in Barbara's tiny snug talking about sheep, sheepdogs and sheepdoggers while Barbara's six dogs snoozed in their favorite corners. Lynn came over for a pat. "I couldn't sell Lynn. They'd find out what a terrible coward she is and lose their temper and its not her fault. She can't help it that she's afraid."

Sheepdogs and sheepdoggers have lost a wonderful friend.

During our trip to Wales, we, like Julie, were able to lean on Mr. Rees's hospitality (and mad driving skills!) so that we could meet Mrs. Carpenter at her home. We spent a lovely afternoon eating fish and chips, walking around her farm, and looking through all of her border collie trinkets and artwork. She gave us copies of her books and was she was the picture of grace. A wonderful lady and I'm so glad I got to meet her.

I'm so sorry that I never had a chance to meet Mrs. Carpenter. I've read about her, and seen photos of her and her dogs, and she struck me as someone that I would love to meet and talk with. I'm sure I would have learned a lot about sheepdogs and sheep from her.
