I Can't Believe This Is Still Happening

Happened upon this while looking for a pig video. I somehow thought that this was illegal, but there was one video only two mos. old. Monkeys riding Border Collies at rodeos and halftime shows. The poor dogs are so fat they're waddling. And the monkeys... poor things.

Disgusting!

Well, it's not illegal to my knowledge... but that's one of the poorest representation of the act that I have seen. But, the condition of the border collies is what has become more common, actually all dogs are more likely to be presented in a over weight condition then in fit condition.

I'm surprised PETA isn't all over that.

I thought that too.

One of the videos I looked at had this HUGE rig - like a giant horse trailer for going from show to show. I expect the dogs and monkeys spend most of their time in cages. The show was called "Team Ghost Riders."

They have to follow USDA guidelines and are inspected both while traveling and their home facilities. There are restrictions as to their housing, such as space, more then most think since the housing has to be large enough to accommodate them for the duration of time they are at shows, amount of time hauled, temperature control, etc.

Same regulations apply to any animal act that you see at fairs and such.

I'd like to believe that USDA has a cadre of inspectors able to keep up with all they're expected to inspect. I have a feeling that inspections don't occur as often as we'd like to think or that regulations are enforced as they should be. There's something about strapping a monkey to a saddle on a dog's back that just doesn't seem very humane to me, no matter who's inspecting (or not).

I heard that homo sapiens was the most intelligent and influential animal on the planet.

Perhaps a more entertaining act would be to have 2 men pen 4 sheep while carrying some eye-covering, hair-pulling toddlers on their shoulders?... hmm... too easy? O.K., put roller skates on one and high heels on the other B)

Not fair to the monkeys; demeaning to the border collies.
