About a month ago, Stella started peeing in the house (in our room, the only place that's carpeted of course) She was also not working very well, and just acting odd...thought she might have a UTI, took her in, everything looked clean...did a complete blood work, and all that looked great as well. The vet decided to try her on some antibiotics, just in case we were missing something...Well she seemed to get better, quit peeing on the floor, and went back to working like normal. Woke up this morning, and there are 3 spots on the carpet ;-( and pretty big areas as well. She has never (even when she was a pup) gone in the house, and if she does have to go at night, she 'squeaks' ;-) until I let her out...I'm a very light sleeper, so I usually hear her. Last night we went to be around 11:00 and the dogs went out right before that for their potty break before bed, so she should have been good for the night... The vet said that if there wasn't a medical reason for the urinating, it could be behavioral...but I can't see why this would come on all of a sudden, nothing new in the household to upset her or anything like that...any ideas on what it could be? I know Julie had mentioned ticks, but we don't really have a tick problem around here, and I;ve never seen one on Stell...plus would a TBD cause them to pee in the house? Just kind of at a loss here...off to shampoo the carpet, yet again ;-( Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
Laura L Posted May 25, 2011 Report Share Posted May 25, 2011 First thing that pops in my head is age. But Stella isn't really old enough for that to be a problem. I don't know what to tell you, but I feel for you. My 2 old guys (13 & 14) both have "leaking" problems if they lay for too long. Bear always liked to lay on the couch and I couldn't figure out who in the world was the cause of that. It's no fun cleaning up either. Little Bo Boop Posted May 25, 2011 Author Report Share Posted May 25, 2011 She is a 4 year old intact female....so age is not a factor or spaying....Yes, Laura I'm all too familiar with the old guys and leaking ;-) She sleeps on the bed with us, so she has to get up and purposely go on the carpet...and whats odd, is she had no trouble letting me know she had to go out at 4am, why couldn't she have let me know whenever she went earlier? juliepoudrier Posted May 25, 2011 Report Share Posted May 25, 2011 I think I would check for TBDs just to be safe. The fact that she improved while on abx implies that there's some sort of infection going on, and it may be that she justn't wasn't on long enough to clear it up. One thing I've learned from the tick list is that TBD symptoms can be unusual and varied, so I wouldn't rule it out, even if the rest of her bloodwork appeared normal. Get your vet to send a sample to Protatek for a tick panel. It's not expensive, and it will at least rule out tick disease, even if it doesn't directly answer the peeing on the floor problem. Also, when the vet checked her, did s/he look for urinary crystals? Bladder or kidney stones could cause seeming incontinence issues as well. J. Little Bo Boop Posted May 25, 2011 Author Report Share Posted May 25, 2011 I guess I'll probably go ahead and get a tick test...Yes Julie, she checked for crystals, none...the only thing was her PH was a little high, and the urine was a little cloudy, but other than that she could find nothing wrong with her. Joellen Posted May 25, 2011 Report Share Posted May 25, 2011 I would have a full blood panel done. I would also have an ultrasound done on her abdomen, specifically her bladder and kidneys. Not to scare you, but these are the symptoms my BC had. We did an ultrasound thinking we'd find a bladder stone, but instead found cancer - Transitional Cell Carcinoma - bladder cancer. She was diagnosed in March of 2010 and is doing great (fingers crossed, knocking on wood while throwing salt over my shoulder) on chemo and peroxicam, along with supplements. I also have a friend with a BC who had similar symptoms and was diagnosed around the same time as my dog. My Molly turned 11 in October, her dog is 9. They did do a complete blood panel on her as well as an ultrasound of her bladder....everything was clean. Joellen Posted May 25, 2011 Report Share Posted May 25, 2011 Oh good, glad to hear all was clear. I have heard of quite young dogs getting TCC, but it is unusual. Another thought, you might want to have her scoped, my friend's BC's TCC was found in the urethra and vaginal vault, it has just recently spread to the bladder itself. It was very scary and the last thing I expected to find. My Molly has always given 110%, and is fighting this cancer the same way. Unfortunately, there is no "cure" we are just trying to prevent growth, in fact we have had some shrinkage. As of now, she appears clinically like a "normal" dog. She started peeing alot, and didn't act "birdy" on scent either. She did end up being diagnosed with Lyme disease and needed two rounds of antibiotics to clear it up. D'Elle Posted May 26, 2011 Report Share Posted May 26, 2011 Jester had a similar problem a couple of years ago, although it was not peeing at night, but rather just suddenly peeing wherever he was, just standing there, indoor or outdoor. Clearly it was incontinence and he certainly appeared to be embarrassed about it. After about $2,000 worth of tests (that was fun to pay for) it was decided that he "probably" had diabetes incipides, (n ot sure if I spelled that right), which is a water diabetes rather than a sugar diabetes. I was told that there was no cure, that medication to control the symptoms could cost $300 to $500 a month, and that without medication it would not get worse. So on the advice of the specialist I did nothing. And shortly after that the symptoms lessened so much that it really is no problem any more. Jester drinks a lot of water and pees a lot, but we don't have problems in the house unless I leave the bedroom door open, in which case he pees in the dining room overnight. I have no idea why, and have decided it is simply a very bad habit he got into somehow. Easy to solve, though, by baby-gating off the bedroom door or simply closing it at night. And, of course, no access to water overnight. I have no idea if this info is helpful to you or not but diabetes incipides might be another thing to consider. Best of luck !! Just FYI: I had a dog with DI (Siberian Husky) and I had her medication compounded for me at the local pharmacy, knocking it down to about $100 a month. My girl had other symptoms that the meds made better and she lived another 5 very expensive years. Always see about compounding! Its saved me tons of money over the years. aljones Posted May 26, 2011 Report Share Posted May 26, 2011 Sorry for the further sidetrack, but on the diabetes insipidus (DI) topic: in addition to compounding the medication, there are also people injecting and reporting better control with less medication--another way to keep the cost down. I was wondering about DI, too, when I read the OP...but I've learned that having a DI dog made me see every case of incontinence through that lens. Also, the urine being " a little cloudy" doesn't sound like DI, where the urine is so dilute that it looks almost like water. Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
