Lewis Moon
We adopted Cerbie, a 10 week old BC mix a week ago and all seems well; he’s learning to sit, come and stay and is crate trained and well on his way to being house broken. My worry is that he is very laid back and seems to sleep a lot and only becomes the “Ricochet Puppy” a couple times a day. What is the normal sleep/play ratio for a 10w/o? What distance would constitute a “long walk” for him? He walks our daughter to school in the morning and walks her home at night (probably about 1/3 mile round trip each) at “puppy speed” and does some indoor command work in between. Is that too much? We are always really careful to let him dictate when to stop. He is a growing puppy. I have a pic of him from the first night we got him and he really looks like a different, older, bigger dog, in just one week! Do pups tend to sleep a lot during growth spurts like kids? OK, I’m a worrier but I’ve become very attached to this little wiggler.
Mariji
My girl slept the entire day through when i got her and would get up only once during the day to act like a mental rabbit for a couple of hours and would play at night in her crate at about 2am. Hvaing her already when i got my second, my second doesn't sleep as much. Puppies sleep alot and especially because of all the thinking your pup does when training and the walks. I never walked my pups so that would definitly tire him out. He sounds precious. Its like kids they all have different routines. It would be a worry if he never really got up, but if he's up and acting normal then he's just a sleeper. My son is 9 months and sleeps at 7pm sometimes not waking up till 4pm the next day and he has always slept through the night since he was only a few weeks old. He simply like his sleep. Don't worry too much, if he's not eating or lethargic then yes there may be something wrong but he sounds fine. Puppies are just so cute! Ms.DaisyDuke
Ok, so there are way more people here with way more puppy experience, but from what I remember, Daisy only really did the "crazy psycho puppy" thing once a day. Around 8pm every night she'd go nuts with the zoomies, attitude, get into mischief that sort of thing for about an hour or so. Otherwise we played games, went for neighbourhood walks and did basic obedience. Puppies do spend a lot of time sleeping though...
Lewis Moon
Thanks a lot, everyone. Yes....I'm a worrier. I got home today and Cerbie did 10 minutes of command work then promptly turned into Ricochet Puppy. Now he's sacked. Such is the puppy life. WyoBC
That's a puppy for you. They will sleep or rest probably 75% of the time. Most of the time a BC puppy will only have a Zoomie once or twice a day. Border collies do have a lot of energy but with daily obedience and play time you will notice that they aren't always the little terrors everyone says they are. I would be happy that he does sleep. ejano
My pups snoozed a great deal at that age. They were very humorous to watch -- one minute they'd be racing around, the next, falling asleep on the spot. Like little babies, its nice when they're sleeping! Your pup will gradually increase her awake times and her play and obedience training along with it. Keep in mind that mental stimulation is also tiring. Even now at nine months, the best sessions are about five minutes, take a break, then do another five and also change up what we're working on. BC-Coding
Mine puppy Gogo go nuts all the time. I guess that means it really varies how much they sleep? Whenever I am around, he is a crazy little creature -- either follows me wherever I go, or chewing his harness ( totally uninterested in the other million toys). Lawgirl
I second what everyone else has said - all puppies are different. I too have a dog that loved to go for a walk but was snoozing the majority of the day, with maybe one or two zoomie sessions a day. Now he is five years old, loves going out but is equally happy to sleep around 22 hours a day, so long as he knows you are near. Just a thought - you will get the dog you train now. If you want a dog that is constantly needing exercise, keep increasing the length of exercise as he gets older. If you will be perfectly happy with a dog that likes his exercise but also loves to sleep and relax at home, don't encourage him to be constantly on the go. He has an inbuilt off-switch by the sounds of it, and that IMHO is too valuable to lose.
