Grooming Aid

Recommended Posts

Juno has never liked to be brushed. Maybe that is an understatement. This is quite surprising because we have always handled her feet, teeth etc since she was 10 weeks old. When we go to brush her, however, it is a major struggle. Anyway, we have discovered a way of really giving her a good brush. What I do is take a tablespoon of peanut butter and mush it into my left hand so that my left hand really looks disgusting. With the brush in my right hand I can move her around with the left hand. It takes about 10 minutes to get all the peanut butter from between the finders etc. so that is a lot of brushing. She doesn't mind the brushing at all when I do this. I have removed most of the undercoat with no objections from her. When I hold my left hand up a bit I can even get a nice brush under her chin.

The folks at Glen Highland Farm smear peanut butter on the side of a refrigerator when they're grooming squirmy or reluctant dogs. It works well to keep the wiggle butts where they want them and they can usually get just about any grooming, nail clipping necessary done with 2 free hands. Very clever.

I am just imagining my friends coming in to find me spreading peanut butter on the fridge. They already think I'm crazy, I don't need to add to it.

"It's for the dog!" would only make things worse. Must remember to keep dog-talk for here, where I am surrounded by the OTHER crazy people.

Must hijack this slightly!

Got a young rescue BC, who had indeed had her nails clipped at a very early age. But in several foster homes, guess it slipped between the cracks (or toes!). A friend helped me one day, with a small plate smeared with PB, and me holding her. Friend even quicked her once or twice - no problem, as long as the PB held out. Success!

However, later that evening in my little RV, youngster and older BC are on my bed, I'm reading. Youngster stands up and with no preliminary "hucka-hucka", proceeds to regurgitate allllll the PB and most of her dinner. Oops - too much rich PB!

Funny boy that older one is....looks at it in disgust, and jumps down off the bed. I removed ALL the covers down to the bare mattress, re-made the bed, but he would not come back up that entire night.

Any other BC worth his coat would've been all over that PB and dinner! But oh no, not my fastidious boy....silly thing.

Another quick note: There's a notice going around that some of the 'new' peanut butter contains xylitol, which is toxic to dogs, so be sure to use the *good* stuff!
