A lesson - a poem

I thought I'd share my poem I wrote on the train

Frozen in motion that's yet to come

I stand I wait I hear the command

The whispered word - I lunge to sweep

I run

I run

I run

I creep.

I stalk

I walk

I stand and stare

Defy? they won’t. They will not dare

They turn, they go

I follow? No.

I lead. Behind? Oh, yes. The line is straight

We turn, they go right through the gates.

And now they stand – the ring invisible

And now they shift – the flock divisible

I rend, I rip, I shed

I hold

And now I gather back the fold.

And now the sun sets on the glen

And now they go into the pen

(Here endeth the lesson for humankind

on how to lead by staying behind)

Thank you all for your kind words  . The interesting thing for me is that I wrote this poem on the train to Warsaw. Warsaw is my home town, I was born and raised there, and yet, all the way there I was actually already coming back home to our farm.

GentleLake,

You're right, English is not my native language. I've been teaching in English (linguistics mostly) at a college and working as a translator for a long time.

No wonder you're so proficient at it then.

I've always admired people who can even muddle through in another language, much less master such fluency. As well as I've always done with and been interested in the intricacies of my own language, I've never been able to get my head around another one. :P

Tess's Girl,

It depends. I used to write a lot, not just poetry but prose as well; two of my prose pieces were actually published in the US :) (in Cicada and Snowy Egret). This poem was written after quite a few years when I had not written a thing. And the this thing just hit me on the train :D . Maybe I am going back where I shouldn't have left.

Thank you all for the encouragement.
