Lawgirl
I just came across this paper regarding the "family tree" of canines. http://www.cell.com/cell-reports/fulltext/S2211-1247(17)30456-4 I am by no means good at genetics, and admit I struggled at times. I did gather that BCs (along with Aussie Shepherds, Kelpies and Australian Cattle Dogs) all come under the UK Rural family. Interestingly, so do Greyhounds. They speculate that sight hound hunter dogs began to be selectively bred for herding work (and guardian breeds) millennia ago when hunters turned to farming, explaining why they are from the same genetic line. Also, Nova Scotian Duck Tolling Retrievers have some Collie or Shetland Sheepdog in their heritage, which explains why the suffer from CEA. This may be one for the more scientifically minded. I have no real idea if the study is scientifically sound in terms of sample size etc.

GentleLake
Hopefully this link to the original paper should work: http://www.cell.com/cell-reports/fulltext/S2211-1247(17)30456-4 I saw a mainstream media version (IOW, extremely dumbed down) of this yesterday: http://www.nbcnews.com/health/health-news/lab-report-gene-researchers-map-out-dog-family-tree-n750986 ETA: I think the original link is breaking because of the parenthesis. If you copy and paste the entire URL it'll work.
