HJTRAS Posted August 25, 2014 Report Share Posted August 25, 2014 we live in the country and Ziggy and I went down in the basement well she flipped out found a snake and ripped the snakes head off. She did so fast totally like instinct she seemed to now how to do it. Never seen anything like it. Really not happy about snakes in the basement. CMP Posted August 26, 2014 Report Share Posted August 26, 2014 We have only garter snakes where I live - no native poisonous snakes in these environs - and Molly thinks they are toys. She regularly brings them to the porch and tries to stuff them in her toy box. I have learned to check for creatures before the toybox comes in at night. Mom of Mya Posted August 26, 2014 Report Share Posted August 26, 2014 I don't blame Ziggy I don't like snakes either, YUCK. I am glad Mya only killed a chipmunk the other day and not a snake. She has been chasing the million chipmunks we have and at last caught one. She put it down and nudged it wanting it to take off and run again but alas when she scooped it up it was to run no more. We do have rattlesnakes and copper heads in some areas of Indiana, I have not seen one here but does not mean they are not here so i am glad she has not run into that yet. I have seen other snakes around the house and my daughter's yorkie came up carrying a 4 foot snake skin double YUCK!!! playing with it. CMP I don't think I would be taking her toy box outside LOL!! Ziggy has me freaked out I don't know what she did with the snakes head after she ripped it off and now I am leary about checking her toy box.. ourwully Posted August 26, 2014 Report Share Posted August 26, 2014 My 10 month old Juno hasn't found any snakes yet although I have seen a few small ones in the yard. She has caught a toad and a vole. Surprisingly she didn't hurt either one. She herded the vole until it finally escaped into the yard and she actually carried the toad to one of her spots before letting it go unharmed. CMP Posted August 26, 2014 Report Share Posted August 26, 2014 Oh Molly kills many things and eats/tries to eat them. Frogs,snakes, mice, voles, rabbits once or twice, all manner of insects. The other day she looked sort of longingly at a raccoon we saw while on a wheelbarrow walk. I wish she was more fearful sometimes, I really do. The guard dogs get/ward off most of the varmints that might be harmful to livestock or non-guard dogs but we still see the odd critter wandering around at night. A rabies carrying raccoon was found in the next province a few weeks ago and I have been freaked out ever since. Thankfully I rarely see snakes on my property so my puppy has never encountered one. A few days ago my daughter did have to intervene when she caught Nattie trying to play with a very large scorpion. Dogs will run right up to a coiled rattler and stick their nose right down there to smell what it is and get bitten on the face. I would not encourage a dog to go after snakes unless its an area where the snakes are harmless. Even then I wouldn't want my dogs killing snakes. Snakes do a lot of good in their environments. My dogs will go after squirrels and rabbits and kill them if they can. Most of the time they can't catch them. The there was the yorkie they were playing tug of war with (he was OK). I also don't do anything that might encourage cats because I'm pretty sure my dogs would kill one of they got ahold of it. One of the most poisonous snakes in all of ZA and the same breed that was responsible for my little Jrt bitches' death. I actually whacked poor Zorro with a broom to get him to move away from this snake. I almost had a heart attack. In rural areas it tends to be added and all farm dogs get it, to the best of my knowledge.
