Rush Fan
I'm planning to put two x-pens together for my puppy in my finished basement. Looking for ideas on something cost-effective, comfortable and chew-proof to put under it to protect my carpet.
CptJack
Get a piece of plywood and cover it with peel and stick tiles. Or several pieces of plywood and/or subflooring.
GentleLake
Maybe a remnant of linoleum flooring?
rushdoggie
Maybe a remnant of linoleum flooring? If you are leaving puppy unsupervised in the ex pen, then this is my choice. If it is just to have puppy confined in your living area, while you are nearby but not paying close attention, I typically don't put anything down. PuppyMavis
We used linoleum for ours.
urge to herd
Tarp if you're going to be nearby. Linoleum if not, remnant that's cheap. Toss & replace as needed. Ruth & Gibbs
diane allen
Yep, what they said. I've had two different remnants of linoleum - sometimes you can get really wild patterns really cheap, cuz who wants to look at them?? LOL! Just be sure they're quite a bit bigger than the x-pen, so if and when the puppy gets big enough to "move" the x-pen, the linoleum is still under it. [i just realized you said TWO x-pens - not sure why you'd need that much space, but adjust these ideas accordingly. I used one for up to 8 months - but pup wasn't in it for hours on end.] Another great idea, which I'll have a hard time explaining, but here goes: You don't want the x-pen to "collapse." So, get some pieces of 3/4" (or 1") PVC pipe. Find a four-way connector (sometimes the only place is a "specialty" place, maybe that supplies agility equipment) to use as the center "hub." Cut the PVC pieces so they reach from the center to beyond the edges of the pen. Then cut a slit in the bottom of each piece of pipe, so it rests down onto the pen. You can use ball bungees or zip ties or even just rope (be sure there are no hanging pieces for pup to chew on!) to hold the pipe in place. You can do this either with the pen in a square or more "rounded" - either works. You do know that pictures are required of all puppies mentioned here, right? ;-) diane

Liz P
Nope. My pups destroyed linoleum in short order. It's also very slippery. Horse stall mats worked great though, non slip and way too heavy to damage.
Liz P
PS, my layers were heavy duty tarp, then stall mats, then wood shavings. I pulled the tarp up along the sides of the x pens to keep the shavings inside. Worked great and the carpet underneath is pristine.
Journey
Finished basement? Concrete? I'd not put anything under if it's concrete. I use dry deck, you can buy enough to have the entire area covered and then some so when the ex pen moves it stays on them.
Rush Fan
You do know that pictures are required of all puppies mentioned here, right? ;-) diane Thanks for the thoughts. I just created a signature with some pics. They are all 1-2 weeks old but she is still just as cute. (Thanks for reminding me I need to take some new pictures!) GentleLake
Finished basement? Concrete? I'd not put anything under if it's concrete. If the concrete's not sealed it'll absorb urine and feces smells. Good thought about linoleum being too slippery. I hadn't really considered that but should have. Gloria Atwater
I've had good luck with a scrap of textured linoleum from our local flooring place. Cost me 10 bucks. Then I throw some puppy blankets and old towels on top of that. Edit to add, this was for an 8 week old pup so she didn't have enough room to play hard and fall down and the blankets and towels gave traction. Gloria Atwater
Tractor Supply also sells half-sized, 1/4 inch stall mats that I use in my chicken house. Those might even be better!
