Border collie sensitivity to ivermectin and other drugs

My old dog was on Advocate (flea/worm preventative) in her early years which contains moxidectin and imidacloprid. I switched to other products when someone said it was a risk as 30/40% of collies carry a gene which makes them sensitive to ivermectin, moxidectin and other drugs. I must admit I was never comfortable with dosing with a systemic insecticide anyway. Ben the new dog was given Advocate while in the Rescue and I am trying to decide whether to continue with it. Vets here seem to push Advocate - border collie or not. Just wondered whether anyone had their dog tested or avoids certain drugs 'just in case'.

You can read more about the MDR1 gene mutation on Washington State University website. (Just google Washington State University VCPL MDR 1 test.) Border Collies are less than 5% affected. I had both of mine tested anyway, just for curiosities sake and they were both negative/negative.

Cheers.

I have to say my old girl never had a reaction - though she did seem sensitive to drugs generally. We used to start at the low end of a dose and work up.
