BorderCollieDundee Posted March 1, 2015 Report Share Posted March 1, 2015 I have a family friend that is in the military and they are being stationed in Hawaii. Problem is they have a year old female border collie that they cannot take with them. I love this dog and I offered to take her and they agreed. She is a very smart dog and I would love to compete with her in agility, obedience, flyball, and possibly disc if she enjoys it; but she is CKC registered. I know that I cannot compete with her in the AKC unless I spay her but is there any where else I can compete with her? I know that CKC is not a good breed registry but I can't change that. If I could I would get her registered with the ABCA or even the AKC in a heart beat. I have heard of the USDAA, do they allow CKC dogs to compete? If Canadian, it's the Canadian equivalent of ACK, I wonder if AKC would transfer the registration. You may know that many people here won't even PAL their border collies with ACK because of the adversarial history between ACK and the working border collie people and registries. ACK is antithetical to everything we believe in as far as the preservation of the working border collie. I don't do agility, but I think USDAA may allow any dog to compete, regardless of registration. I'm sure some of the agility folks on the list will give you the correct answer. htmlgirl Posted March 1, 2015 Report Share Posted March 1, 2015 CKC is the Canadian equivalent of AKC.... no better or worse. Is this the correct registry she's registered with? My BC is CBCA registered, which is the ABCA equivalent here in Canada. I honestly have no idea on the answers for your questions, but I would imagine there would be many options in the US where a Canadian registered dog could participate, as we do here for AAC events (Agility Association of Canada). In Canada, only one breed registry is allowed for each breed and for the Border Collie, it is CBCA (Canadian Border Collie Association) the first (and only) registry allowed for the breed in Canada (unless things have changed). The Continental Kennel Club is what I'd call a "junk registry" and the papers worth nothing as registration papers. However, this sounds like a great opportunity for you to help your military friend, give a great home to a deserving dog, and have fun with her (AKC is certainly not the only option for performance sports, as has been pointed out). alligande Posted March 2, 2015 Report Share Posted March 2, 2015 Lots of opportunities to compete in sports with an unregistered dog, I decided to stay well away from AKC events, in my area it did limit the number of competitions that I could enter, as AKC agility was very popular but we found plenty to do. NAFA welcomes all breeds and mix breeds and does not care about all that stuff. http://www.flyball.org/ Lots of clubs and tournaments in North Carolina, check the link to find a club near you.
