I know I don't post here that much and he's not a border collie but today we helped dear old Trey over the bridge. I can't tell you all how much it hurts. We knew it was coming but still, it came rather quickly and unexpectedly. He was a good boy and will be very missed. May he meet up at the bridge with my past shelties. I know my old Nik has a word or two for him.

For the first time since I was 9, I don't have a sheltie in the house. It feels so empty.

My first dog that was really mine was a wonderful shetlie named Jake. He was the most fantastic dog, and opened my husband's heart to dogs ( of which we now have Cody & Duchess). I feel so, so sorry for you. I know how much it hurts - about equal to what an amazing dog you had. You will always have a special place in your heart for shelties, as you should. Trey was a really beautiful dog, he will always be in your memories.

Thanks so much for everyone's kind words. I especially love hearing about other people's shelties.

I'm so sorry for your loss. I felt the same way when my last sheltie died -- it just wasn't the same.

It really isn't the same. They're a truly great breed and the breed of my childhood I suppose. I can't help it but I'm already looking at sheltie rescues wondering if I might be wrong about not wanting another.

High up in the courts of Heaven today

A little dog-angel waits.

With the other dogs he will not play,

He just sits alone at the Gates.

”For I know my Mistress will come”, says he,

”And when she comes, she will call for me.”

And her Mistress far down on the earth below,

As she sits in her easy chair

Forgets sometimes, and she whistles low

For the dog that is not there;

And the little dog-angel cocks his ears

And dreams that his Mistress' call he hears.

And I know when at length his Mistress waits

Outside in the dark and cold

For the hand of Death to open the gates

That lead to the Courts of Gold,

The little dog-angel's eager bark

Will comfort her soul while she's still in the dark.

~ Adapted from a poem by Norah M. Holland, 1870

Via con Dios, Trey.

My deepest condolences.

I grew up with dogs and cats but my 1st dog as an adult was a sheltie. Even tho I lost Niki in 1995, I still think about her often. She was a wonderful companion and my first heart dog. I hope your memories of Trey will soon bring a smile to your face even if you have tears in your eyes.

I'm so sorry for your loss. Trey was a beautiful boy. And I know what you mean about the house feeling empty without a Sheltie. When I think of being without Sassy, my heart clutches at the idea of not having such a bright little face watching me as I go about my day. As much as I love Border Collies, I think I'd always want at least one Sheltie by my side.

Aww, Lauren, our condolences to you and your family. I almost felt like I knew Trey though I never met him. I haven't been on in several days so I missed this initially. I hope you can find some peace in Trey's memories and that he visits you in the future in some special way.
