Joey 1991-2009

She changed a lot of people's minds about Aussies.

We don't have any claims to fame as a trial dog in the Open world. She did win her share of ASCA events, and once a Novice event at a USBCHA trial. Pretty decent little outrunner, good feel for stock if she felt like using it. Sassy. If I said way to me and she didn't agree she's bark at me and then go come by.

I worked her hard. Far harder than a dog should have been worked sometimes. She was tough as nails and never complained. Her first time on stock was on unbroken yearlings and the clinician spared no mercy on her inexperience. It was learn or get kicked. So she learned.

Most importantly she was the best friend a women could have. When it was just me and her she had my back, whether it was a loose bull or 300 head of goats scattered in the swamp.

She raised a lot of Border Collies, and taught dozens of dogs their manners both on and off stock. We were working a little collie from a local dairy once that had a bad habit of almost bringing in the calves, then flipping to the head and driving them off. She wouldn't do that if you stood out there, and I had about enough of running out to deal with it.

So I put her out there with Jo as a brace. She flipped and drove those calves back over Jo twice. The third time Jo came around the group and whipped her soundly. It was clearer than any training I could have done, and the problem was solved from that point on.

She wasn't much in terms of reproducing herself, and after one litter I just didn't bother. There wasn't meant to be another Joey in any way.

That's ok. I don't think my heart could take another one.

Rest in peace sweet girl. Until we meet again.

I'm sorry to hear this. I know how special she was to you. They just don't make them like that anymore, do they?

Ode To A "Heart Dog":

So this is where we part, my friend,

And you'll run on, around the bend,

Gone from sight, but not from mind,

New pleasures there you'll surely find.

I will go on. I'll find the strength.

Life measures quality, not its length.

One long embrace before you leave,

Share one last look, before I grieve.

There were others, that much is true,

But they be they, and they aren't you.

And I, fair, impartial, or so I thought,

Will remember well all you've taught.

Your place I'll hold, you will be missed,

The fur I stroked, the nose I kissed.

And as you journey to your final rest,

Take this with you....I loved you best.
