Intact female - preventing leaking?

Natt is my first intact female. Her first heat was fairly light, and her 2nd heat has been much heavier. She is an inside dog, so I have put her in panties (with disposable [human] pads) while she is in the house. This system has worked fairly well. She ignores the panties while wearing them.

To me, her panties could fit better. Particularly at night, there can be leakage problems into the pants (which are also absorbant) despite lining with a heavy pad (or two).

I was wondering - 1. is there an alternate way to deal with the dripping associated with the heat periods. and 2. what pants do other people use? Maybe there is a better fitting pant I should be using. I have the Pooch Pad brand.

She is a very slim, long-bodied dog - which may affect fit.

Thanks in advance.

I also crate them at night or when I am not home, no panties. I think it's important for them to be able to air out.

My suspicion is that most products for dogs are designed for fat pets. I find BCs often need a size smaller than what the catalogue suggests. Most of my bitches have worn the smaller panties for dogs up to 25 lbs, suggested for breeds such as Cocker Spaniels and Beagles. This is despite being more like 35 lbs.

Thanks for the replies. I will start leaving off the pants at night. And take out the bedding so I can wipe down the plastic bottom? I had thought about it, but wasn't sure what others did.

I think the leaking is predominantly caused by an ill-fitting pant since the pad is not fully (or even half-way) used. I have used a heavier pad and sometimes combined it with a second pad to get a little more width - but sometimes will still get leaking on heavy days (and pads are changed several times per day).

I talked to fellow classmates in my agility class. One woman used little boy pants which already has a 'hole'. Another woman, who owns boxers that have a similar thin- waisted body type, had bought a style she liked at a dog show but there was no brand name on them. [it's another 7 months before that dog show comes back to town.]
