(“Tea”) Yamamoto. “American Lambs” is a lovely collection of interrelated stories and poems about working sheepdogs, sheep, and rural life. The stories are both humorous and beautiful, and we had a wonderful time working with Tea to produce it. WORKING WITH A STOCKDOG, by Anna Guthrie. “Working With A Stockdog” is not, unlike most stockdog books, aimed at helping people learn to train their own dogs. Instead, its primary audience is ranchers who have purchased or otherwise acquired a working dog but who do not necessarily know how to get the most out of their new “tool.” In addition, the book will be extremely helpful to novices who are striving to understand how dogs and livestock interact, and who also want a broad picture of what “real” work is possible to accomplish with a stockdog. This is the book that I wish I had read when I purchased my first trained dog eight years ago. Yamamoto, the author of American Lambs, is Tea on our Boards, and that Anna Guthrie, the author of Working With a Stockdog, is stockdogranch on our Boards. Also, now that I've gotten my copies, I see that the illustrations/diagrams for Anna's book were done by Sue Rayburn, who is Sue R on our Boards. I did the characters for the illustrations but Anna had another contributor (who might also be a member of the boards) do the actual set-up for the different illustrations (that's what took the time and effort). I am planning on getting both books very shortly. Tea writes wonderful stories and such about her life with dogs and stock, and Anna has written a book to help those many people who have gotten a trained or started dog for farm or ranch work, and "then what?". Thanks to Heather for facilitating the production and distribution of several excellent books aimed at the stockdog community. We might not have these resources without her efforts. Stoga Posted November 16, 2009 Report Share Posted November 16, 2009 It was a blast. Here's the thing: Anna's book is pretty unique (as I'm sure Tea's is). It's the first stockdog owner's manual I've seen, and it's really helped me, as a novice, understand the big picture and why certain skills (dog and handler) are important in managing livestock. I was forwarded the blog by someone who was certain I must be a JK fan because I have border collies. Not quite, but I do plan on ordering American lambs soon. Alchemist Posted August 20, 2010 Report Share Posted August 20, 2010 I just wanted to note that I ordered both of these from Amazon a while ago as my "summer reading" books, and have finally had time to enjoy them. "American Lambs" was a treasure. A visit to another way of life superficially very distant from my own, but perhaps not so very far removed after all. I definitely related to Tea's animal-mad niece, though I was never as inventive as she showed herself. The stories made me hunger for more. "Working With A Stockdog" was perfect. For any of you who have ever wondered what "slicing a flank" meant or what makes a flank "square" (and why it's desirable), it's all laid out, with diagrams so simple that anyone can comprehend it. Of course, the book goes far beyond this, and I'm certain it has much of value even for experienced stock handlers who are new to learning the benefits of communicating with a canine assistant.
