New female fixed 4 year old BC introduced to 3 year old Fixed male.....Questions

Recommended Posts

I adopted Rebel fixed male BC two years ago, he is now 3. Very smart loves to exercise and be outdoors. Very close to me, he has a large wooded lot with access to garage and also heated dog house. I wanted to get him a companion and brought home Gracie a fixed 4 year BC to him Saturday. I guess not to bad, but Rebel seems to want all my attention and now I give it to both of them equal. I have a seperate food and water dish for each of them...about 10 feet away from each of them but Rebel its still growling over it and they did get into a small fight. They each have toys and do play with them. Anything I need to do or just give it time?

Thanks

Bruce

The rescue I volunteer always recommends introducing dogs slowly, though a baby gate and/or on neutral ground.

Too late for that now, of course.

If 10 feet of separation isn't enough, move the food dishes even further apart, far enough that there's no reaction from Rebel.

And for the time being, maybe he needs more than half your attention. Try to give him some alone time with you so he knows he's not being pushed out, then gradually move back to sharing your time equally with them.

Best wishes integrating them.

I agree with Gentlelake. It does take time and perhaps they could have used a little more time separate, but the thing you'll want to do, besides what you're already doing, is make sure each of them has room and time away from each other. Make sure Rebel has quality time with you without the new girl at hand.

And if eating 10 feet apart is too close, then move them farther apart, or even feed them in separate rooms or crates. Food and toys are two of the biggest triggers for conflict between new dogs, so those will be points to watch.

I think they'll be okay in the long run. It just sounds like Rebel is a little unsettled by this sudden intruder in his territory and home, but if you manage it wisely, in due time they'll probably be fine. Best of luck!
