What would you do to retrain a dog that tends to run too square at the beginning of the outrun?

The dog in question is more tense at the post than I would like him to be, so I've been reluctant to fuss with him too much. Still, I'd like to work on it if and when he becomes more relaxed at post.

Had this problem, lived this problem...Worked with Pat Shanahan about 3 years ago when Grace was in her first nursery year and she was awful for kicking behind me at the start of the outrun...what he had me do was to start close say 75-100 yards away from the sheep...close enough so the dog can see them well and their eye kinda kicks in. Anyway, get the dog keyed in on the sheep..have them beside you...tell them walk up walk up..you will be walking forward patting your leg. When they get a bit away from you walking up on the sheep, you need to play and see which works best, but either hiss them around or give them a flank... Whenever I run grace, you will see me line myself up about 10 yards in front of the handlers stake and walk straight towards it...patting my leg or saying here grace here. just about the time we are at the stake, I hiss her and she does a nice pear shaped outrun. (most of the time anyway.) Course sometimes she gets really hard to hold and I get locked in on keeping her with me and just send her on the fly which is all good I guess, unless of course you are at the finals and look up and realize your sheep arent out yet! Course only a total moron would do that huh? Hope that helps....
