In April I posted a happy follow up to Lewis, a dog who spent 7 months in foster care with us before finding his perfect home.

Lou's Happy Beginning

Today I bring you another 7 month update, and this time a sad one.

Lewis who is mentioned on the special adoption pages of the TDBCR, is Mr. Cinderella. He came to us as a terrified, abandoned dog. After seven months in foster care he was adopted into a loving home in Tatla Lake, and became an exceptionally talented cattle herding dog. It was as if he was born to be a ranch dog.

His new Mum phoned on Monday. She had been crying for two days. On Friday, in the middle of the night, two intoxicated persons drove onto the ranch. It is suspected that they had arrived to steal gasoline. Lewis raised the alarm, barking and chasing after the thieves. He was protecting his people, his cattle and his ranch. His barking roused the sleeping family; they charged outside in time to see Lewis being purposefully and intentionally run over and killed. Their story, once they were cornered, was that they thought Lewis "was a garbage bag". He did not suffer. His injuries were massive and horrific. Louie died protecting what he loved. He was loyal to the end.

RIP Lewis.

That's horrible, RDM. I hope his adopted family finds a legel way to make sure those people pay for what they did. What difference does it make if he was a "garbage" dog or not???? Only a sick individual could deliberately do something like that.

At least the last 7 short months of his life were happy ones but most important, he knew that he was loved.

What a tragic story. I am so sorry, RDM. At least Lou found meaning and fulfillment, not to mention a family who loved him, in his short life, and he died protecting a family worthy of his brave loyalty.

RIP Lewis, I know you will be missed.

Oh gosh, poor Lewis, poor family to have to bear such a heartbreak. I really do believe that most people are good, but once again the horrible ones claim a victim and create sorrow.

Their story, once they were cornered, was that they thought Lewis "was a garbage bag".

Does this mean that they were arrested? I hope they are made to pay for their crime.

That is just awful. I know it won't make any difference to their sorrow, but they should have his value computed by his work on the farm, etc. and the offenders made to pay restitution for his murder. I hope the judge orders their community service to be served (hopefully after a period of incarceration!) working with dogs.

Run free Louie!

Those low-life lousy rotten bas***ds!!!! I hope they get the book thrown at them, thrown in jail and left there to ROT!

May Lewis' spirit forever watch over his family. There has to be a VERY special place at the Bridge for dogs who give their lives protecting their loved ones.
