OT: My son stuck an acorn in his ear!!!

Recommended Posts

He is 4 and absolutely HATES anything to get in his ears. Now WHY in this world would he go and stick an acorn down in it then?!?!?!

Hubby picked him up from daycare Friday and when they got home I had some errands to run. Got home around 8:30 and hubby tells me that my son has an acorn in his ear. I looked down his ear and there is *something* down there but I can't get it out w/ the tweezers. So off to the ER we go.

It took 2 nurses, myself and my mother to hold him down and still couldn't get it out. On discharge the nurse told me that if I wasn't comfortable enough to wait until Monday to get into a specialist, then take him to one of the other bigger hospitals (ours is small and not equipped for alot of things) about 45 minutes away. We were at Crosby until midnite last nite so I let him get some rest and took him this a.m. to Forrest General. They couldn't get it out either. So now I have to take him Monday to an ENT and hopefully they can get the acorn out without a lot of problems.

It apparently is lodged so deep that its next to his eardrum which really worries me. Other than being sore though (from trying to remove it) its not giving him much problem.

Hubby only found out about it because he bathed him and washed his hair. Peyton hates when his daddy washes his hair and would rather have me do it. So it's very possible that it has been in his ear for a couple of days or so.

Please keep us in prayers that all goes well Mon. and they get this thing out w/o damaging his ear.

Oh my!

Sorry to giggle but I can't help it! :D

Did they try to super glue something to it and then pull it out? I think that's what they did on tv when a girl had a roach crawl way into her ear. She was terrified and panicking and I don't blame her!

I sure hope the only lasting effect is laughter as the story is retold over the years! I'll definately keep your son in my prayers.

edit: I just did a google search and from what I'm reading, it might not be a good idea to wait until Monday. They say wood, beans, etc, can swell from the moisture and cause damage. If they did not try the super glue trick then you might want to have them consider that. Use the wooden end of one of their long Q-tips, apply it to the clean, dry object for about 10 seconds, then pull. That's how they do it.

Be sure to let us know how this turns out.

Sorry to hear about your son having an acorn stuck in his ear. Hope it comes out soon with no damage.

Every time now that I hear anything about an acorn, I think about an internet friend's dog who was seriously ill several months back. Come to find out, the dog had an acorn stuck in his colon.

Please let us know what happends.

Kids do the darnest things. Jared is funny about his ears too. But it didn't stop him from putting popcorn in one. Yep, took trip to doctors to get it out. I had gotten most of it but some refused to come out even with flushing. Yes, the popcorn had been there a few days before he said anything. I thought he was joking when he said he had popcorn in his ear. Jared was a little over 3 at the time.

Odd thou that they just left it there. I hope if gets out soon. (((HUGS))) in the meantime, I know you will worry. I would.

When our son was about 5, I took him for his yearly check-up. When the doctor examined his ears, he reached for his long tweezers and pulled out a piece of popcorn! We couldn't remember the last time we'd made popcorn. And Charles hadn't had any at nursery school either. I checked.

Kids are a mystery.

I would definatly try what Miztiki suggested with the super glue,I can't believe they left it in his ear regardless how small a hospital it is,I would be absolutly outraged as soon as I got the acorn out of my kids ear.

A suggestion,,if you do try with the super glue just be very careful when you do pull it out not to just pop it out as it may of formed a vacuum seal after being in there as long as it has, so just pull it very gently out and use the very smallest of amount of superglue on the end of the probe so that none acceidently smears and glues the acorn to the inside wall of his ear channel.

BTW,very heads up suggestion Miztiki thats useing your acorn

(ps) Nik you might want to concider planting that acorn after you do recover it so that for the rest of the boys life you can always point out when he does dumb stuff.

Good luck and I sure hope you can slip it out of there asap.

When I was a kid I stuck a rock down my ear. Why? Just to see what would happen, of course! Curiosity gets the best of kids....

But when I discovered I could not get it back out, I was a bit scared...so I went inside to tell my parents that a big ant had crawled up my arm and put a rock in my ear. Mean ol' ant!

LoL.

Good luck with getting it out...Miz's idea sounded good!

Wait a minute! I didn't mean for YOU to try the super glue thing! I said for them (the hospital) to consider that idea if they haven't already.

Gosh, if the acorn winds up being super glued into his ear then I am going to fee horrible!

I do like the idea of planting the acorn. Then your son can tell his friends that he had that tree stuck in his ear.

Oh Nik, you poor thing and that poor kid!! Ouch. Hope things go well on Monday, let us know. Meg (3) put a small plastic ball up her nose a couple of months ago. She was screaming bloody murder, but luckily we could hold the other side closed and she blew it out after many tries.

I would be uncomfortable leaving it in as well, I wouldn't do the superglue thing myself, but they might have hospital equipment that would make it a safer thing to try. (as Miztiki said)

We it the whole acorn? Those things are pretty big!! You just never know what they are going to do next.

Well, its like this...they had no choice but to leave it in there. He was pretty traumatized having to be held down at both hospitals. The one in town is a small one and all they had was the *alligator teeth* and that didn't work. The other hospital is a major hospital. They tried to suction it out and that didn't work either. Along w/ flushing his ear out.

Which brings us to tomarrow a.m. in the ENT's office to hopefully remove it w/ some type of laser.

My main worry about leaving it in is with it being so close to his eardrum it could possibly rupture it, and then we would have a problem w/ his hearing. Other than that, he seems to be coping fine w/ it for now.

Thanks all for the well wishes. I will give an update tomarrow when we get home.

When I look past the scary part of all this it is pretty funny.

Oh, the nurse told me that her granddaughter put a butter bean up her nose and nobody knew about it until it started to sprout. Apparently her breath stunk so bad that the mother had her checked out to see why, and the Dr. found the butterbean. :D

So sorry to hear about your son's problems. I wish you the best of luck. He will probably be just fine and in 10 years you will all laugh about it and embarrass him with the tale in front of his friends. Plant the acorn and hopefully it will grow -- along with the family legend.

Regards,

Raising Boys

a) For those with no children - this is totally hysterical!

 For those who already have children past this age, this is hilarious.

c) For those who have children this age, this is not funny. (AMEN!)

d) For those who have children nearing this age, this is a warning.

e) For those who have not yet had children, this is birth control.

1.) A king size waterbed holds enough water to fill a 2000 sq.ft. house 4 inches deep.

2.) If you spray hair spray on dust bunnies and run over them with Roller blades, they can ignite.

3.) A 3-year old Boy's voice is louder than 200 adults in a crowded restaurant.

4.) If you hook a dog leash over a ceiling fan, the motor is not strong enough to rotate a 42 pound Boy wearing Batman underwear and a Superman cape. It is strong enough, however, if tied to a paint can, to spread paint on all Four walls of a 20x20 ft. room.

5.) When using a ceiling fan as a bat, you have to throw the ball up a few times before you get a hit. A ceiling fan can hit a baseball a long way.

6.) The glass in windows (even double-pane) doesn't stop a baseball hit by a ceiling fan.

7.) When you hear the toilet flush and the words "uh oh," it's already too late.

8.) Brake fluid mixed with Clorox makes smoke, and lots of it.

9.) A six-year old Boy can start a fire with a flint rock even though a 36-year old Man says they can only do it in the movies.

10.) Certain Lego's will pass through the digestive tract of a 4-year old Boy.

11.) Play dough and microwave should not be used in the same sentence.

12.) Super glue is forever.

13.) No matter how much Jell-O you put in a swimming pool you still can't walk on water.

14.) Pool filters do not like Jell-O.

15.) VCR's do not eject "PB and J" sandwiches even though TV commercials show they do.

16.) Garbage bags do not make good parachutes.

17) Marbles in gas tanks make lots of noise when driving.

18.) You probably DO NOT want to know what that odor is.

19.) Always look in the oven before you turn it on; plastic toys do not like ovens.

20.) The fire department in La Mesa, CA has a 5-minute response time.

21.) The spin cycle on the washing machine does not make earthworms dizzy.

22.) It will, however, make cats dizzy.

23.) Cats throw up twice their body weight when dizzy.

24.) 80% of Men who read this will try mixing the Clorox and brake fluid.

25.) Women will pass this on to almost all of their friends, with or without kids.

That is a riot, I can relate, 3 boys 10 and under!! I am so not letting my boys read that list, give them the ideas they haven't thought of yet.

Nik, a ruptured eardrum sounds scarier than it is. Meg had an ear infection that ruptured one, and honest, it was way better after it ruptured. (superyucky stuff came out, but she was smiling and happy again) The ENT said they heal up just fine and you only run into trouble with numerous repeated ruptures.

Good luck tommorrow, will he need sleepy gas/med for laser? What will your other little ones be doing?

Tammy, I imagine even if they don't want to sedate him I will request it anyway. There is NO way that I am going to put him through being tied down again.

We even had to wrap a sheet around him like a straight jacket and he still got out. The nurse looked at me w/ a look of amazement on her face and asked "How in this world did he do that?"

Love, Love, Love the Raising Boys post. That is sooo true. Thanks for the laugh.

Gavin 9, Jared 5 No way are they reading that list! They do stuff that isn't cover on the list now. I don't need any more ideas flowing into their imaginative minds!!

Now Autumn 3 I have to say gives the boys a run for their money. The boys left my walls alone. She colors them. She has attempted to flush a full tube of toothpaste and candle wax down the toilet. Numberous times the toothbrush and caps down the sink drain. Plus she gets into whatever they are doing. So she isn't gonna get to read that list either.

Nik ~~ Hope all goes well for getting that acorn out.

Meg tried to flush her dad's electric razor down! Yesterday we were in the preK class at church. There was a wild child boy there, who we know and love, who had a nasty burn on his arm. He said he got it by holding his arm on the chandelier, while standing on the dining room table! This child could write that list, no doubt.

Prayers with you today Nik and your little guy. Poor traumatized kid, bet he will never do it again! We are headed to the ENT as well, just for PE tube check with Meggie.

Karrie, isn't it funny how that girl child can think of all different kinds of mischief from the boys? My girl is far more independent than any of my boys which has forced us to come up with all kinds of safety things we never had to worry about with the boys. Then other things got put away because we didn't need them anymore, things that the all the boys had trouble with that she never touches! They are all so different, its a miracle.

Tammy that is the honest truth! All my little monkies are independent and love to go in three different directions just to see if mommy can keep up. Ahhha did the razor survive?

Don't bet he will not try the nut in the ear again. Jared threatened to do it almost everytime we had popcorn for some time. Now 2 yrs later he just asks why did he do put popcorn in his ear etc.

The list is hilarious!! Having 8 brothers (7 that are younger)I can sure relate to it.

I could picture my 9 y/o brother doing just about everything on that list.

21.) The spin cycle on the washing machine does not make earthworms dizzy.

22.) It will, however, make cats dizzy

A few months ago I noticed Missy intently watching the bathroom door. Since "guess who" was supposed to be taking a bath, I quickly figured out what was going on. The conversation went something like this

Me: Do you have Toni (the cat) in there?

Him: yes, but you can let her out now.

Me: You are not supposed to take the cat into the bathroom with you (and I proceeded to let the cat out)

Me: (after reaching down to pet Toni) WHY IS TONI WET?

Him: umm.

Me: DID YOU PUT TONI IN THE BATHTUB??

Him: Well, yes, but Toni wanted to play with my beachball in the bathtub with me.  :D

Nik, I hope that they will be able get get the acorn out without tramatizing you son to much more. That would be pretty tough for a little guy. A couple years ago, one of my brothers who was 11 at the time had an accident with an airnail gun. After 5+ hrs at two different hospitals, a 45 min ambulance ride, x-rays and a MRI, the doctors almost decided just to leave the nail in him!!

We got to the ENT today and Peyton was an angel until the Dr. put the otoscope in his ear. He went ballistic and the Dr. didn't even get a good look. He looked at me and said that there is no way he is going to traumatize him anymore than he already has been. Only option is surgery.

We go tomarrow to do outpt. surgery on his ear. Shouldn't be too bad though. Only downfall is keeping him from sneaking something to drink for the rest of the nite. But the upside is he ate 3...yes 3 WHOLE "pb&j samiches" for dinner so he shouldn't want anything else as far as food. He would live off of nothing but pb&j's if I let him.

Good luck with the surgery! I had ear surgery when I was 5, and I don't remember any of it, so it isn't that bad. Just be sure to let him have some ice cream or something else tasty afterwards.

My old history teacher had a roach crawl into her ear while she was sleeping at night. They ended up flushing it out, but until it died (in her ear) she could feel it moving. Yuuuuck! Now she sleeps with cotton balls in her ears. I think I would too!

Best of luck with surgery Nik, you are probably already there. I am having a miracle day where I am actually HOME to do housework and the little ones are playing well together. Both of these happening at the same time is a gift from above!! So, that is why I missed you Nik, so busy cleaning my floors.

Karrie, no the razor did not survive, it was hopelessly wedged in that stupid turn present in old toilets. We ended up having to replace the whole toilet! We tried everything to get it out, but nothing worked. A new toilet ended up being the cheapest fix. Sadness, then we moved soon after, so couldn't even enjoy that brand new toilet!!

Here in the UK, we have a doctor who appears on daytime TV shows and writes pieces for the listings mag - Dr. Mark Porter. In one article, he wrote that he would not recommend putting anything smaller than your elbow in your ear  . I guess he was right!

Hope everything turns out OK.
