Border Collies in the movies

I bought a DVD at Tractor Supply for $5 and it has 10 movies on it. At least two of them are either about or have Border Collies in them. The first was Owd Bob, which I know has been discussed here before. Was funny the dog that was supposed to be a "champion" sheepdog in the movie, could not work sheep at all. In fact it looked like the dog was entirely obedience trained as it ran with tail up in the air and never once looked at the sheep. Second movie I watched was "The Proud Rebel" with Alan Ladd and Olivia de Havilland. Watching that movie I was very impressed with the work the dog was doing. I told my daughter, "that has to have been a good working dog". As the movie was made in 1958 I looked in my Arthur Allen book and found "King" who was an actual champion working Border Collie in the 50s. Was very much a contrast between the two dogs in the movies I watched.

There are a number of episodes of All Creatures Great and Small with very short snippets of working Border Collies in them. I saw one the other day where some cows were being moved and the dog was overrun by a cranky cow. Ouch! The dog was mostly white.

I bought myself the entire series for Xmas. None of the Border Collies that showed up in the series looked anything like show dogs. It was quite refreshing!

One classic Border Collie movie is Mist: A tale of a sheepdog puppy. I know it is for little kids, but it is absolutely adorable! I've watched it while caring for younger kids, and I think it is entertaining seeing how the different dogs work. Another good thing about the series is that it introduces younger kids to working border collies at a younger age.

The only other Border Collie I can think of that has been on T.V is Bandit from The Little House on the Prairie. I loved that dog's coat patterns. Pure white except for a black "bandit mask" on the face. Also, his coat texture was amazing, and he always brought happiness to the show. :D
