When I first joined this forum in 2013, I had never heard of the ABCA, "The Dog Wars"(this book, wow! If you haven't read it, do so ASAP.) "Barbie Collies," and had no clue that a divide between working/ABCA and show/AKC existed. I thought a BC was a BC and they herded sheep. Honestly, I also knew zilch about what the AKC has done to hundreds of breeds, and also never heard of genetic testing dogs. I had a half BC at the time, and was making future plans for adding a purebred, registered, BC from a well known(and greatly disliked by members here) AKC breeder.
Lurking on this forum, and reading old threads, I quickly found out that there is a huge difference between working and show dogs, and the two are not interchangeable in the tasks they are bred to do.
Though I sometimes haven't liked the atmosphere of this forum, the heated debates and personal attacks(which I got sometimes) the cold welcomes and critiques to clueless members who dared to have any connection to the AKC or say anything positive about it, I now understand how it is, especially since I read The Dog Wars. Some of you here spent tons of money, countless hours, stress, sweat and tears, fighting against the AKC and I can now understand why your feelings are as strong as they are against them.
I now have two working Border Collies, one ABCA, one not, and I wouldn't trade them for anything that the AKC produces. If it hadn't been for this forum, I would probably be very disappointed in my Barbie Collies that are beautiful but can't move cattle three feet.
My current 8 month old, with no herding training whatsoever but operating on instinct alone, just helped me catch a goat this morning, by bringing it right to me(from 5 feet away, but the stupid thing kept running every time I reached for it!) and holding it there until I could get ahold of it.
I want to thank you for changing my mind and making me much happier now than I imagine I would have been had I gone the other route.
I know some of you despair of every teaching us newbies anything, and feel like just giving up, but don't! Just remember me, one of your "converts!"
Again, thanks so much!
